The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather alert warning Kenyans to prepare for heavy rainfall starting this Friday and continuing until Tuesday next week.

In its latest 5-day forecast, released on Friday, August 15, the weatherman said that many areas across the country should expect moderate to heavy rains over the coming days.

Regions Expected to Receive Heavy Rainfall

According to the weather advisory, the heavy rains will mainly affect the Highlands both East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, various parts of the Rift Valley, and areas in North-western Kenya.

Kenya Met further mentioned that the rainfall in these areas will likely be accompanied by thunderstorms, especially in the second half of the 5-day period.

Counties in Highland East

Several counties in the Highlands East are likely to experience these rains, including:

  • Nyandarua
  • Laikipia
  • Nyeri
  • Kirinyaga
  • Murang’a
  • Kiambu
  • Meru
  • Embu
  • Tharaka Nithi
  • Nairobi

Highland West & Lake Victoria Basin

Similarly, in the western highlands and the Lake Victoria Basin, the rain will fall in:

  • Siaya
  • Kisumu
  • Homabay
  • Migori
  • Kisii
  • Nyamira
  • Trans Nzoia
  • Baringo
  • Uasin Gishu

Other Affected Rift Valley Counties

Additional counties in the Rift Valley expected to receive significant rainfall include:

  • Elgeyo Marakwet
  • Nandi
  • Nakuru
  • Narok
  • Kericho
  • Bomet
  • Kakamega
  • Vihiga
  • Bungoma
  • Busia
  • West Pokot

Areas Expecting Light Showers

While the rainfall in some areas will be heavy, regions like the South Eastern Lowlands — including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta — are expected to receive lighter showers. Even Tana River’s inland areas will only experience light rain.

Counties along the Coast and North Eastern regions, such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will also have light rainfall during the forecast period.

Temperature Warning – Cold Weather Expected

In addition to the rain, the meteorological department has warned that very cold weather conditions are expected in the next five days, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and parts of the Rift Valley.

Residents living in these areas should prepare for extremely low temperatures, dropping to about 7°C during the first two days. The temperatures may rise slightly to around 9°C for the remaining days.

Kenya Met added that cloudy and chilly conditions would be experienced, especially during the mornings and evenings in most of the mentioned counties.

Strong Winds Alert

Lastly, the department has warned of strong south-easterly winds blowing at speeds of more than 12.86 metres per second across the Coast, the South-Eastern lowlands, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya. These strong winds may affect visibility and general outdoor activities, so caution is advised.

Final Advice to Residents

Kenyans living in the affected regions are urged to stay alert, dress warmly, and take the necessary precautions against possible flooding, thunderstorms, and cold-related illnesses.

Farmers and road users are also advised to plan accordingly to avoid any disruptions caused by the expected weather changes.
