Matiang’i Blasts Ruto Government, Defends Gachagua, Says Looting Is Killing Kenya
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has launched a strong attack against President William Ruto’s government, claiming that Kenya is being destroyed by open looting and misuse of public funds.
In a powerful speech on Tuesday, Matiang’i also came out to defend former Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua, who recently accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of massive corruption and theft.
Matiang’i, who was speaking during a meeting with several opposition leaders, insisted that Gachagua was facing political intimidation and unfair treatment simply for speaking the truth.
He said that Gachagua’s statements had been backed by information from two respected international media sources, proving that his allegations were not baseless.
“What is happening in this country is not just corruption—it is outright looting. It’s daylight robbery of the country’s resources, and we are just watching. But we must begin to resist. When someone like Rigathi starts speaking about it, they threaten to arrest him,” Matiang’i said.
He added that one of the most shocking claims involved the government’s alleged involvement in the sale of weapons to neighbouring Sudan. Matiang’i noted that the government’s silence on the matter spoke volumes and showed that there might be some truth to the allegations.
He criticised the government for quickly threatening Gachagua with arrest whenever he speaks out, yet the same leaders once said that Kenyans are no longer fools. “They think Kenyans are stupid.
They are the same people who told us that there are no more fools in Kenya. Why are things suddenly criminal only when Rigathi says them?” he posed.
Matiang’i urged Kenyans not to fear intimidation and to stand up against what he called a looting regime. He emphasized that looting is worse than corruption, arguing that while some countries can survive corruption, no nation can survive organized looting of its own economy.
“Some countries survive corruption, some institutions even work in spite of corruption. But I have never seen any country survive looting,” he stressed.
The remarks come days after Rigathi Gachagua, while on a trip to the United States, made several serious accusations against the Kenya Kwanza government.
He spoke of major embezzlement of public funds and also claimed that President William Ruto met secretly with three Al Shabaab militants in Mandera — a claim that sparked national outrage.
Following those claims, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordered that Gachagua must record a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations once he returns to Kenya. The government said those accusations were dangerous and extreme.
However, Gachagua dismissed the demand and said he would not record any statement. Soon after, he announced that he would cut short his US trip to return home ahead of the November 27 by-elections. He is expected to land back in Kenya on Thursday, August 21.
Matiang’i ended by urging Kenyans to refuse intimidation and expose wrongdoing boldly. In his words, this is no longer just politics—it is about saving the country before it is too late.
