Boniface Mwangi Declares 2027 Presidential Bid, Promises Free Education, Health, and Water
Kenyan activist and human rights defender Boniface Mwangi has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the 2027 Presidential Elections, unveiling an ambitious agenda that centers on free education, healthcare, and access to clean water for all Kenyans.
Mwangi made the announcement on Wednesday, August 27, at Ufungumano House, a venue historically linked to civic and political activism.
Addressing a crowd of supporters and fellow activists, Mwangi said he was motivated by Kenya’s current challenges, which include a rising national debt, widespread corruption, suppression of human rights, high cost of living, and weak governance systems.
“Why are we gathered here today? We are here to celebrate the Constitution—our Katiba—and discuss how it can be fully implemented for the good of every Kenyan,” Mwangi remarked during his speech. He then declared, “I have chosen this day to announce that I will be running for the President of the Republic of Kenya in 2027.”
Mwangi’s Vision: A New Beginning
Unveiling his campaign under the slogan “Mwanzo Mpya” (A New Beginning), Mwangi said his bid is built on the values of Love and Courage. He promised to build a Kenya that welcomes and accommodates all its citizens, regardless of their ethnicity, economic background, or social status.
His vision includes:
- Free education, healthcare, and water to ensure that every citizen has access to basic needs.
- Justice for victims of police brutality, particularly families who have lost loved ones to extrajudicial killings.
- Recovery of stolen public resources, with tough action against leaders implicated in corruption.
- An end to tribal politics, by refusing to enter alliances with tribal kingpins or leaders associated with past oppressive regimes.
Mwangi said his campaign would be powered by citizens and young people, drawing inspiration from the recent wave of youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year. He emphasized that his movement would reject the influence of moneyed elites and tribal politics, instead focusing on grassroots mobilization.
A Citizen-Powered Campaign
Unlike traditional politicians, Mwangi explained that his approach would not rely heavily on expensive rallies or elite-driven politics. Instead, he would adopt a door-to-door, community-based model, engaging directly with Kenyans in informal settings to explain his vision and policies.
“The future of our country is in our hands—no one else’s,” he told the audience, urging citizens to rise up and take responsibility for shaping the direction of the nation.
He added that his campaign would largely depend on citizen funding and voluntary contributions, showing that ordinary Kenyans can finance change without relying on corrupt money.
Not Mwangi’s First Foray Into Politics
This will be Mwangi’s second major attempt at elective politics. In 2017, he contested for the Starehe Parliamentary seat but lost to musician-turned-politician Charles Njagua, popularly known as Jaguar.
Mwangi finished third in that race but maintained his activism, becoming a consistent voice in the fight against corruption, police abuse, and government excesses.
Although Mwangi did not disclose which political party he would use for his presidential run—or whether he intends to vie as an independent—his announcement immediately positioned him as one of the most prominent activist-turned-politicians in the race.
A Crowded 2027 Presidential Race
Mwangi’s declaration comes as the list of 2027 presidential aspirants continues to grow. Already, several notable figures have confirmed their interest in succeeding President William Ruto, who is seeking re-election for a second term despite widespread criticism of his first term in office.
Those who have expressed interest include:
- Former Chief Justice David Maraga
- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
- Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka
- Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i
- Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua
- Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah
Each of these leaders is expected to shape the political narrative ahead of 2027, making it one of the most competitive elections in Kenya’s history.
President William Ruto, on his part, has maintained that he is confident of securing a second term, dismissing critics who argue that his administration has failed to deliver on promises such as lowering the cost of living and fighting corruption.
Mwangi’s Message to Kenyans
Mwangi ended his speech with a powerful call to action. He reminded Kenyans that political change will not come from the same leaders who have ruled for decades, but from ordinary citizens standing up for their rights.
“The dream of a new Kenya will only be realized if we act with love and courage, and if we protect this country for the future generations. Mwanzo Mpya begins now,” he declared.
As the country moves closer to the 2027 elections, Mwangi’s bold entry into the presidential race is expected to inject new energy into national debates, especially among the youth and those disillusioned with mainstream politics.
