People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has strongly dismissed reports suggesting that she is shifting her political ground to support President William Ruto.
The claims emerged after one of President Ruto’s close allies alleged that Karua was following in Raila Odinga’s footsteps by warming up to the Kenya Kwanza government.
According to the ally, the senior counsel had chosen to align herself with the justice system and decided to rally behind the head of state.
Karua, however, firmly rejected the allegations. She clarified that she remains committed to her political stance and is not in any way planning to work with President Ruto.
Instead, she emphasized her support for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s ‘wantam’ agenda, which she says reflects her values and beliefs.
The veteran politician urged her supporters to ignore the reports, describing them as fake news meant to mislead Kenyans.
“I do not belong to William Ruto’s praise choir, and I maintain that he is the most unsuitable person ever to occupy high office,” Karua declared in her response.
Her remarks come at a time when the country is witnessing growing political realignments as leaders prepare for the 2027 General Election.
Many political observers had speculated that Karua might follow Raila’s path and cooperate with President Ruto, especially after Raila embraced a working relationship with the government through the Broad-Based Agreement.
During the 2022 General Election, Karua was Raila Odinga’s running mate under the Azimio la Umoja coalition. Their partnership, however, has since collapsed after Karua openly distanced herself from Raila’s decision to engage closely with President Ruto.
At the start of this year, she announced that she had parted ways politically with Raila, saying she could only consider working with him again if he abandoned his ties with Ruto and supported her presidential bid.
Karua has already declared that she will be on the ballot in 2027 as a presidential candidate. Her latest statement appears to solidify her position and clears any doubts about her loyalty or possible allegiance to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Meanwhile, President Ruto has continued to push his message of unity, stating that he is open to working with any leader who is willing to support his agenda for the country.
Despite this, Karua has insisted that she has no plans to join him, maintaining her stance that his leadership is not what Kenya needs.
