Truck Driver Killed in Deadly Multi-Vehicle Crash Along Webuye–Eldoret Highway
A tragic road accident claimed the life of a truck driver after three vehicles collided head-on at Chimoi, along the busy Webuye–Eldoret highway, on Wednesday, September 10.
Images and videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke revealed that the crash involved a passenger service vehicle (PSV) matatu and two long-distance trucks.
The aftermath showed the mangled wreckage of the matatu lying off the road, while both trucks sustained visible but less extensive damage to their front sections.
The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association of Kenya (LoDDCA) confirmed that the deceased, identified as Kiiyo, had been travelling back to Mombasa when the tragic accident happened.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our member today, September 10, 2025, in a road accident near Chimoi on his way back to Mombasa. Kiiyo was an active member, and his sudden death has left us in shock.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family, colleagues, and friends during this difficult time,” read a statement from the LoDDCA Board.
Eyewitnesses and photos from the scene painted a grim picture: the matatu had been completely crushed and was barely recognizable, with desperate residents and motorists rushing to the wreckage to rescue trapped passengers.
Meanwhile, one of the truck drivers escaped the crash without injuries, though the exact number of passengers inside the matatu and their conditions remain unclear.
Authorities have yet to confirm the number of people injured, as investigations and rescue operations continued late into the evening.
This deadly crash comes just hours after another serious road accident at Kijabe Junction on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, where a head-on collision between a personal car and a truck left several people injured.
In that incident, both vehicles sustained severe front-end damage, forcing first responders to use a lorry to pull them apart in order to access the victims.
The two accidents, happening within the same day, add to a worrying rise in road crashes across Kenya over the past few months, reigniting concerns about road safety, reckless driving, and the heavy toll being borne by families of victims.
