U.S. Clarifies Information on the Upcoming Green Card Lottery
The United States government has clarified that the Diversity Visa (DV) 2027 Green Card Lottery has not yet opened. According to an announcement by the U.S.
Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, the registration period for the DV-2027 programme remains officially closed.
This clarification came after several misleading reports circulated online claiming that the Green Card Lottery registration had already started.
The U.S. government dismissed these claims as false and warned the public to be cautious of fraudulent information being shared on social media and by unofficial websites.
In the statement, the Department of State emphasized that no official announcement has been made regarding the opening dates for the DV-2027 application period. “The Diversity Visa (DV) 2027 entry registration period is not open at this time.
We are aware of fraudulent claims suggesting that registration is ongoing and of individuals or organizations pretending they can improve your chances of selection. These claims are completely untrue,” the statement read.
The government further assured the public that any updates about the registration process, including opening dates and possible changes to the system, will be communicated directly through official State Department channels. “DV-2027 registration dates and details about any updates to this year’s process will be announced by the Department of State when available,” the statement added.
The clarification comes shortly after the U.S. government introduced a new fee structure for the Diversity Visa Lottery programme.
Under the new rule, applicants for the DV-2027 programme will be required to pay a small electronic registration fee of $1 (approximately Ksh130) when submitting their online entries.
This marks the first time in the history of the programme that participants will pay a fee to register for the lottery. The new fee will apply when the official registration period opens.
The Department of State explained that the $1 fee is meant to help cover administrative costs associated with managing the high number of applications each year.
Previously, only those who were selected for interviews were required to pay the $330 (around Ksh42,619) visa application fee.
By introducing this new charge, the Department aims to make the process more balanced and ensure that the administrative costs are shared among all applicants instead of being carried only by the selected individuals.
The Department also made it clear that all registration fees are non-refundable, regardless of whether an applicant is selected or not, and cannot be transferred to another year’s lottery.
This means anyone applying for the DV-2027 programme should take time to understand the process and ensure they submit their applications through the official U.S. government website once registration officially begins.
The U.S. government continues to encourage applicants, especially from countries like Kenya and other eligible nations, to stay alert and avoid being scammed by people or online platforms claiming to offer “special help” or “guaranteed selection.” The only legitimate source of information remains the official website of the U.S. Department of State.
