Nairobi: Man Impersonating KDF Brigadier Arrested in Kilimani With Fake Recruitment Letters

A man pretending to be a senior Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer has been arrested in Kilimani after allegedly conning youths with fake military recruitment letters.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the suspect had been posing as a KDF brigadier and promising unsuspecting victims direct recruitment into the military.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, November 18, the suspect was nabbed inside his Kilimani apartment while fully dressed in Kenya Air Force uniform.

Investigators say he had been luring desperate young people by issuing them falsified admission letters to the Recruit Training School (RTS) in Eldoret.

During the raid, detectives recovered several items believed to have been used in the scam.

These included documents branded with the Ministry of Defence logo, six counterfeit admission letters all bearing the same serial number, seven fingerprint forms, a Yilmaz Defence Industry ammunition manufacturing manual, and other materials linking him to the fraudulent scheme.

The DCI condemned the suspect’s actions, stating that he had “promoted himself from an ordinary civilian to a fake KDF brigadier” and exploited the ambitions of hopeful youths.

The agency added that the man had been running a profitable con, extorting money from young people seeking to join the military through shortcuts.

Detectives urged the public to avoid falling for such scams, reminding Kenyans that legitimate KDF recruitment is transparent, free of charge, and conducted strictly through official channels.

The incident comes just three weeks after the conclusion of the official KDF recruitment exercise, which ran from Monday, October 13 to Saturday, October 25.

During the nationwide exercise, the military sought suitable applicants for various positions, including General Service Officer cadets (both regular and graduate), Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen and Women, and Defence Forces Constables.

KDF had earlier advised interested applicants to follow the correct application procedures, including submitting their details online and presenting required documents such as original and copy of their National ID, KRA PIN, and academic certificates.

Recruitment teams drawn from the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force, and Kenya Navy were deployed across the country at official recruitment centres.

Meanwhile, the DCI confirmed that the impersonator is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
