CS Wandayi Speaks on 2027 Presidency and ODM’s Political Future
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has spoken openly about the possibility of running for president in 2027, making it clear that he does not intend to contest the top seat under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
Wandayi explained that ODM currently lacks a strong presidential candidate who is ready to enter the race, and for that reason, he personally has no plans to vie for the presidency in the upcoming polls.
The Cabinet Secretary made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Ramogi TV. He dismissed any speculation that he might challenge President William Ruto, saying he is focused on working closely with the Head of State even beyond the next election cycle.
“As the ODM party, we have been seeking the presidency for the last five elections, but we have never succeeded. That chapter is now behind us,” Wandayi explained, noting that the party must start facing political realities instead of dwelling on past losses.
He went on to ask an important question about the party’s direction: “Is there an ODM member who is prepared to run for president so that we can rally behind them? As for me, I am not ready to vie in 2027. Maybe it is something I can consider after 2027, but not now.”
Wandayi emphasised the need for ODM to outline a clear political roadmap, warning that the party could easily lose ground if internal wrangles continue. He urged ODM leaders to show maturity in how they handle political debates and cautioned them against indulging in unnecessary fights that offer no value to the public.
He further criticised a section of ODM members who, he said, prefer engaging in populist politics aimed at dividing the party rather than strengthening it. According to him, leaders should stop attacking others without offering solutions or alternatives that can help Kenyans.
“Everyone has the freedom to speak — whether you are a preacher, a businessperson, or a politician. But when you criticise something, also give an alternative idea so that people can judge whether your proposal makes sense,” he remarked.
Wandayi defended his decision to cooperate with President Ruto’s administration, saying his role as a Cabinet Secretary is meant to serve Kenyans and not for personal gain. He noted that political appointments are temporary and should not limit leaders from thinking about the country’s welfare.
“Our decision to work with the government is not for our individual benefit. Today I am in the Cabinet, but tomorrow I could be removed. Life will still go on,” he stated.
Addressing the political climate ahead of the 2027 elections, Wandayi said Kenya currently has only two major political fronts. He observed that the next presidential contest will likely revolve around the camp aligned to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and President William Ruto’s side.
In his view, ODM has a very slim chance of presenting a competitive presidential candidate in the next election. He noted that Gachagua’s team has already organised itself and crafted a strong political plan, leaving ODM with fewer options.
“Should we as ODM members — or even as the Luo community — bring forward our own presidential candidate for 2027? Or should we continue working with President Ruto? Because Gachagua and his team have already structured their political agenda, and we cannot fit in,” Wandayi observed.
His comments added to the ongoing debate about ODM’s future, its alliances, and whether it can still mount a presidential challenge in 2027. The CS’s remarks suggest that ODM might lean more toward cooperation with the government as it reassesses its political strength ahead of the next election.
