Breaking: Gachagua Demands IG Kanja’s Resignation

Gachagua Calls for IG Douglas Kanja to Step Down After Narok Violence

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has demanded the resignation of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja following violent clashes that took place in Narok on Monday.

In a tough and strongly-worded statement, Gachagua challenged Kanja to step aside, accusing him of failing to act on what he described as well-planned aggression against members of the opposition.

Gachagua said that if Kanja could not fully control the National Police Service, then “the honourable thing to do is resign.”

His remarks came a day after chaos erupted in Narok Town, where a huge contingent of police officers was deployed during his campaign activities.

According to Gachagua, the police presence was not a coincidence but part of a deliberate plan engineered by Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina.

He alleged that two police officers attached to Maina were seen openly giving instructions to other officers and coordinating actions that led to the confrontation. Gachagua argued that this was clear evidence that the Narok incident was politically influenced.

He further criticised IG Kanja for staying silent, saying that the lack of action suggested “involvement, irresponsibility, and incompetence.” Gachagua also accused the IG of allowing elected leaders allied with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to take control of the national police command, especially during politically tense moments.

The former Deputy President went on to claim that Kanja ordered the creation of roadblocks on all major routes leading into Narok Town, allegedly to obstruct his supporters and frustrate his campaign efforts. He said this was a sign that the police service was being misused to serve political interests rather than public safety.

Along with calling for Kanja’s resignation, Gachagua demanded the immediate transfer of two unnamed police officers stationed in Narok. He accused them of working under direct directives from Betty Maina and insisted they should be removed from the area and barred from issuing instructions to senior officers.

Gachagua stressed that he wanted immediate action taken regarding the Narok Town incident, claiming the situation showed how political interference had crept into the police service.

The Narok Town Ward seat has become a heated contest between UDA’s candidate Robert Kanyinge Ole Kudate and Gachagua’s DCP party.

Tensions are also rising in other competitive regions such as Mbeere North, where both UDA and opposition candidates are aggressively campaigning in what many expect to be a very tight parliamentary race.

This latest standoff highlights growing political friction as parties fight for dominance in key battleground areas ahead of upcoming elections.
