Maraga Directly Challenges President Ruto’s Economic Track Record
Former Chief Justice David Maraga has launched a strong criticism of President William Ruto’s handling of the country’s economy, accusing the Head of State of driving Kenya deeper into debt without delivering meaningful results.
In a detailed message shared on X on Monday, January 24, 2025, Maraga said Kenyans are being told the economy is improving even as their daily lives grow harder.
Maraga questioned the President’s approach to managing public finances, warning that ordinary taxpayers are carrying the heavy burden of decisions they never participated in.
According to him, the country has borrowed nearly 40% of its national budget since President Ruto came into office.
He further pointed out that Kenya’s debt has climbed from Ksh8.6 trillion to Ksh12 trillion in just three years, a trend he believes exposes future generations to serious financial risks.
He also rejected government claims that the economy is stabilizing. Maraga referred to recent official communication indicating that the country’s foreign reserves have reached USD 12 billion.
However, he insisted that these numbers do not reflect the reality on the ground because ordinary families are yet to experience any relief from the high cost of living.
Maraga framed Kenya’s economic situation as a matter of honesty, accountability, and responsible leadership. He argued that Kenyans deserve leaders who prioritize local investments that create employment and open new opportunities for young people.
“We can continue pretending that President Ruto understands our struggles. Or we can choose an honest leadership that treats every tax shilling as if it’s the last we have,” Maraga said, stressing that accountability must be restored.
As a 2027 presidential aspirant under the United Green Movement, Maraga has been working to portray himself as a people-centered candidate.
He has openly embraced public crowdfunding as a key part of his political strategy, presenting himself as a leader who is directly supported by citizens rather than powerful interests.
Maraga concluded by urging Kenyans to demand leadership that respects public resources and uses them wisely for national development.
