DCI Arrests Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi After Viral Assault Incident
Kitutu Chache South Member of Parliament Anthony Kibagendi has been arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following a widely circulated assault incident captured on CCTV.
The legislator revealed his arrest on Tuesday afternoon, January 20, through a message shared on his social media platforms. According to the post, DCI officers intercepted him, blocked his movement, and forcefully took him away, initially heading towards the DCI headquarters located along Kiambu Road.
“I have been aggressively blocked by DCI officers and arrested. I am being taken to DCI headquarters,” the message shared on his account read.
Later, the MP clarified that he had been booked at Muthaiga Police Station. However, at the time, he did not give details about the specific reason for his arrest, leaving many Kenyans speculating about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
While official details remained limited, information obtained indicates that Kibagendi was being sought in connection with an alleged assault case that dates back to December 2025.
The incident, which was captured on CCTV and later went viral online, reportedly occurred at a food establishment during daylight hours.
In the footage, a man believed to be the MP is seen approaching another man who was seated quietly at a corner of the restaurant. Moments later, he appears to launch a physical attack, leading to a brief scuffle between the two.
The situation escalated until two other men at the premises intervened in an attempt to separate them and calm tensions.
Despite their efforts, the alleged attacker appeared visibly angry and aggressive. At one point, he reportedly turned on one of the men who had stepped in to stop the fight, further intensifying the confrontation.
Senior security officials in Kisii had earlier confirmed that detectives were looking for the MP after a 38-year-old man formally lodged an assault complaint on November 27.
In a subsequent statement, the complainant claimed that the MP confronted him over allegations that he had interfered with what were described as “private affairs.”
The slow pace of investigations has since been criticised by the victim’s legal team, who questioned why the matter took so long to progress despite the existence of clear CCTV evidence showing the alleged assault.
In December, police officers in Kisii disclosed that Kibagendi had been advised to voluntarily present himself to authorities to help speed up the investigations. Around the same period, the MP, through his lawyers, moved to court seeking anticipatory bail.
The court granted the request, with Lady Justice Teresa Achieng’ Odera setting the anticipatory bail amount at Ksh50,000, allowing the MP temporary protection from arrest as investigations continued.
Following his arrest, Kibagendi is expected to be transported back to Kisii by Wednesday, January 21. He is set to be arraigned in court, where he may formally take a plea as the legal process unfolds.
