Kenya Airways Wins Major Global Sustainability Awards

Kenya Airways has once again been recognised on the global stage for its strong commitment to sustainable aviation, after winning three major awards at The Aviation Challenge 2025, which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This latest recognition marks the fourth year in a row that the national carrier has been honoured for its efforts in promoting eco-friendly operations and driving green innovation within the aviation industry.

At this year’s event, Kenya Airways received awards for Most Impactful Solution – Catering, Game Changer of the Year, and Special Recognition for Collaboration with KLM.

These awards highlight the airline’s broad and practical approach to sustainability, covering everything from onboard services to strategic international partnerships.

Speaking after the announcement, George Kamal, the Acting Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airways, said the awards reflect the airline’s long-term commitment to integrating sustainability into every part of its operations.

He noted that the recognition is a result of deliberate innovation, teamwork, and focused action across the organisation.

“This recognition shows our commitment to expanding sustainable practices through innovation and focused action. It reflects the hard work of our people and partners as we continue to embed sustainability into our operations and create real change across the industry. We are proud to play our part in building a stronger future for aviation,” Kamal said.

The Most Impactful Solution – Catering and Game Changer of the Year awards were given in recognition of several initiatives that have now become standard on Kenya Airways flights.

These include the use of recyclable aluminium food containers, bamboo cutlery instead of single-use plastic, paper cups replacing plastic cups, and canned beverages instead of plastic bottles. These changes, though simple, have had a significant impact on reducing waste across the airline’s operations.

According to Kenya Airways, these measures have helped the airline avoid more than 337 tonnes of single-use plastic every year, while also generating annual savings of over Ksh50 million. The carrier says this proves that environmental responsibility and cost efficiency can go hand in hand when sustainability is approached strategically.

In addition to the individual awards, Kenya Airways also received Special Recognition for Collaboration for its continued partnership with the Dutch airline KLM. Over four editions of The Aviation Challenge, the two airlines have worked closely to exchange ideas, develop practical solutions, and speed up the implementation of sustainable practices across their operations.

This collaboration has played a key role in turning innovative ideas into real, measurable impact.

Kenya Airways’ low-cost subsidiary, Jambojet, was also recognised during the event, winning the Most Compelling Story award.

The accolade was awarded for Jambojet’s effective use of storytelling to communicate its sustainability initiatives and the impact of its environmental efforts in a clear and engaging way.

The Aviation Challenge 2025 brought together airlines that are members of the SkyTeam alliance, providing a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the development of scalable solutions aimed at making the aviation industry greener.

The challenge focuses on turning sustainability ideas into actions that can be applied across different airlines and regions.

According to Kenya Airways, the awards demonstrate its practical and results-driven approach to sustainability, while also highlighting the growing role of African aviation in global efforts to reduce environmental impact.

Through innovation, partnerships, and consistent action, the airline says it is contributing meaningfully to a more sustainable future for air travel.

These achievements come at a symbolic moment for the national carrier, as Kenya Airways marks 49 years since its founding. Established on January 22, 1977, the airline began operations as Kenya’s national flag carrier following the dissolution of East African Airways.

Nearly five decades later, the carrier continues to evolve, positioning itself as a leader in sustainability within the global aviation industry.
