Security Agencies Foil Planned Al-Shabaab Attack in Nairobi
Security officers from the Counter Terrorism Policing Unit have reportedly prevented a planned terror attack in Nairobi following a coordinated intelligence operation targeting individuals suspected to have links with the extremist group Al-Shabaab.
The operation, carried out on Wednesday, February 18, came after weeks of close monitoring by investigators who had been tracking the suspects’ movements, communication channels, and logistical activities.
According to security officials, the breakthrough followed credible intelligence reports that alerted authorities to suspicious activities linked to a possible attack within the capital.
Acting on this information, officers conducted a series of raids that resulted in the recovery of several weapons, including assault rifles, pistols, ammunition, and explosive devices believed to have been prepared for use in a large-scale attack targeting civilians.
In a statement released by the anti-terrorism unit, officers said the operation successfully stopped what they described as a dangerous plot intended to cause mass casualties.
Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that the suspects were allegedly planning to execute the attack during the holy month of Ramadan, a significant period for Muslims around the world marked by prayer, fasting, and religious gatherings.
Authorities believe the suspects may have chosen this time because of increased public movement and gatherings, which could have made attacks more devastating.
Security agencies further revealed that intelligence reports indicated the group was not only planning a terror attack but was also exploring other criminal activities.
These included possible kidnappings of foreign nationals and vehicle hijackings, activities often used by extremist groups to generate fear, gain publicity, or secure ransom payments to finance their operations.
Investigators disclosed that the success of the operation followed months of surveillance and covert intelligence work focusing on a suspected terror network operating within the Dadaab refugee camps.
During the operation, officers recovered arms and ammunition, including pistols, explosives, and approximately 600 rounds of bullets, which intelligence reports indicated were being transported for use in planned attacks within Nairobi.
Following the disruption of the plot, security teams have intensified patrols across key locations in the city.
Authorities have also strengthened roadblocks, increased surveillance, and enhanced security checks in areas considered potential high-risk targets as a precautionary measure aimed at maintaining public safety.
Detectives praised the efforts of security personnel, noting that the continued vigilance of intelligence officers and law enforcement agencies has played a major role in preventing attacks and protecting lives.
Officials emphasized that ongoing intelligence gathering remains critical in addressing evolving security threats and dismantling terror networks before they can carry out their plans.
Meanwhile, investigations remain ongoing as forensic experts analyse the recovered weapons and explosives in an effort to trace their origin and identify other individuals who may be connected to the disrupted plot.
Authorities say the investigations will also focus on uncovering wider networks that may be supporting extremist activities within the country.
The latest security development comes barely two weeks after Kenya’s intelligence agencies flagged several accounts suspected of financing terrorism.
The accounts, which were frozen by the Financial Reporting Centre, were reportedly linked to ten Kenyans, two Tanzanians, and one Ugandan who are under investigation for allegedly receiving, storing, or transferring funds believed to support extremist operations.
Officials noted that financial tracking has become an important tool in weakening terror networks by cutting off funding channels used to facilitate attacks.
Security agencies have reassured the public that the situation remains under control, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as investigations continue.
