Chaos as Teargas Disrupts Sifuna’s Rally in Narok
Tension erupted in Narok Town after a rally led by Edwin Sifuna was briefly thrown into disarray when a teargas canister was hurled into a crowd of supporters.
The incident caused panic among attendees and temporarily interrupted what had started as an energetic and well-attended political gathering.
Earlier in the day, Sifuna had joined other leaders at a church service held at Covenant Church International Ntulele. The event brought together worshippers and political figures, setting the stage for the rally that followed later in Narok Town.
After the service, the leaders proceeded to address residents as part of the ongoing Linda Mwananchi campaign.
However, signs of possible disruption had already started to emerge hours before the rally began. Reports indicated that police officers had ordered the removal of sound equipment, including speakers that were meant to be used during the event.
This move raised concerns among organizers and supporters, who viewed it as an attempt to interfere with the planned gathering.
Despite these early challenges, Sifuna’s team stood firm, maintaining that all the necessary authorities had been informed in advance about the rally.
They insisted that the event was lawful and should proceed without interference. Their determination was evident as the rally went on, even with rising tension in the air.
The situation escalated when a teargas canister was suddenly thrown into the crowd, forcing people to scatter briefly as smoke filled the area.
In videos circulating online, Sifuna, together with Babu Owino, could be seen standing their ground despite the chaos. The two leaders addressed supporters while urging them to remain calm and avoid panic.
Supporters at the rally also showed resilience, with many refusing to leave the venue despite the disruption. Some were heard chanting slogans critical of the government, including the phrase “wantam,” while others openly declared that they would not be intimidated or forced to disperse.
One supporter could be heard saying that even though teargas had been used, they had no intention of running away.
After a short pause, the rally resumed, with the leaders continuing to speak to the crowd under challenging conditions. The atmosphere remained tense, with teargas smoke lingering in the air and light rain adding to the discomfort.
Nevertheless, the leaders pushed on with their message, showing determination to engage with their supporters regardless of the obstacles.
Looking ahead, the Linda Mwananchi movement is expected to shift its focus to Nairobi next week. There, they are set to face off with the rival Linda Ground faction during the upcoming ODM National Delegates Convention.
The meeting is shaping up to be a significant moment for the party, as internal divisions continue to play out in public.
Speaking earlier during the church service, Sifuna expressed confidence about the upcoming showdown in Nairobi. He noted that the two factions would finally meet face to face, allowing party members and supporters to decide which side they align with.
He also criticized the rival group for holding meetings in distant locations such as Kilifi, suggesting that the Nairobi gathering would bring the contest closer to the people.
At the same time, the Linda Mwananchi faction has already indicated that it plans to boycott the convention.
They have raised concerns about alleged irregularities and questioned the legitimacy of the planned NDC, further deepening divisions within the party.
With political temperatures rising and rival factions taking firm positions, the events in Narok may be a sign of more intense confrontations ahead.
As the focus shifts to Nairobi, all eyes will be on how the situation unfolds and whether calm or further tensions will define the next phase of these political engagements.
