Kenya Met Lists 4 Regions to Receive Rains This Weekend

Despite the continued sunny and dry weather being experienced in many parts of the country, the Kenya Meteorological Department has now announced that several regions are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the next five days, from April 3 to April 7, 2026.

In its latest weekend weather advisory released on Friday, April 3, Kenya Met said that parts of Western Kenya, Nyanza, Central Kenya, and the Rift Valley should prepare for rainfall that may become heavier in some areas as the weekend progresses.

The forecast comes as many regions have recently been experiencing warm sunny days and dry conditions, making the expected rains an important weather change for residents and farmers alike.

According to the department, counties in Western Kenya, Nyanza, and the Rift Valley expected to receive light to moderate rains include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia.

Other counties likely to experience the same weather pattern are Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

Residents in these areas are expected to experience mostly sunny or partly cloudy conditions during the day before showers begin later in the afternoon. In some places, the rainfall may continue into the evening and night hours.

A similar pattern is also expected in Central Kenya, where counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi are projected to receive afternoon and night showers after sunny intervals earlier in the day.

Kenya Met noted that the rains in these areas may start after cloudy morning conditions, followed by sunny breaks before the showers develop later.

In the South Eastern Lowlands, the counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, together with inland parts of Tana River County, are also expected to receive rainfall.

However, in these regions, the rains are likely to start towards the end of the five-day forecast period, meaning residents may continue to experience dry and warm conditions for most of the weekend before the showers finally arrive.

Meanwhile, residents living in the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as parts of northwestern Kenya including Turkana and Samburu, should expect mainly dry weather conditions over the same period.

Even so, Kenya Met indicated that a few areas could still receive occasional light showers, although these regions are largely expected to remain sunny and hot.

Apart from the rain forecast, the weather department also warned that some regions are likely to experience very cold nights, especially in Central Kenya and parts of Western, Nyanza, and the Rift Valley. Night temperatures in these places are expected to drop to as low as 6°C, which could make early mornings and late nights extremely chilly for residents.

The temperatures are then projected to gradually rise to around 11°C as the forecast period comes to an end.

At the same time, Kenyans living in the coastal belt and northern parts of the country have been advised to prepare for very high daytime temperatures. In Northern Kenya, temperatures are expected to rise sharply to about 37°C, while the coastal counties may record highs of around 33°C.

The hot conditions are likely to be felt most during the afternoon hours, and residents have been encouraged to stay hydrated and avoid long exposure to direct sunlight.

Overall, the latest forecast by Kenya Met signals a significant shift in weather patterns across different parts of the country, with some areas preparing for rain and cold nights while others continue to face intense daytime heat.

The department has advised Kenyans to keep following daily weather updates so they can plan their activities, farming schedules, and travel safely throughout the weekend and early next week.
