The Deputy Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Oburu Odinga, has come out strongly to dismiss claims that his party has suspended coalition discussions with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Speaking during a press briefing in Kisumu on Friday, April 17, 2026, Oburu explained that the reports circulating in the media are inaccurate and misleading.
According to him, ODM has not halted any talks simply because no formal negotiations have even begun in the first place.
He made it clear that although there is a working relationship and mutual respect between ODM and UDA leadership, the process of forming a coalition is still at a very early stage.
In fact, he pointed out that the two parties have not even established official negotiating teams, which is usually the first step before any serious discussions can take place.
Oburu emphasized that it would not make sense to claim that talks have been stopped when they have not officially started.
He added that his relationship with William Ruto, who is also the leader of UDA, remains cordial and constructive. This, he said, shows that there is still room for engagement in the future if both sides agree to move forward.
The clarification comes after widespread reports suggested that ODM’s Central Committee had decided to suspend coalition talks due to alleged disagreements between the two parties.
However, Oburu dismissed those claims as baseless, urging the public to rely on verified information instead of speculation.
Concerns Over Political Zoning
At the same time, Oburu raised concerns about what he described as interference by some UDA leaders in areas traditionally considered ODM strongholds.
He criticized these actions, saying they could undermine trust and cooperation between the two parties, especially if they are considering a future partnership.
He stressed that ODM is not interested in competing against parties it may potentially work with ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
According to him, political zoning and mutual respect for each party’s support base are important in maintaining stability and building meaningful alliances.
Oburu went further to call on President Ruto to take control of his party members and ensure discipline within UDA ranks.
He warned that continued interference in ODM zones could damage the goodwill that currently exists between the two sides.
ODM’s Stand on Presidential Ambitions
During the same briefing, Oburu also addressed growing speculation about possible presidential hopefuls within ODM. He firmly shut down such discussions, stating that the party’s constitution is very clear on this matter.
He explained that ODM already has a defined structure, where the party leader automatically becomes the presidential candidate if the party chooses to field one. This, he insisted, leaves no room for internal competition over the presidential ticket.
Oburu made it clear that any member with ambitions to run for the presidency outside of this framework should consider seeking opportunities in another political party.
He maintained that discipline and adherence to party rules are key to maintaining unity within ODM.
A Message of Caution and Clarity
Overall, Oburu’s statement appears aimed at clearing confusion and calming political tensions surrounding the rumored coalition talks.
While he acknowledged the possibility of future engagement between ODM and UDA, he made it clear that the process has not yet officially started.
His remarks also highlight the delicate balance parties must maintain as they position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Issues such as trust, respect for political zones, and internal party discipline are likely to play a major role in shaping any future alliances.
