Shock as Police Officer Flees After Allegedly Planting Bhang Inside Station
Residents of Makueni County were left stunned after a police officer was reportedly caught cultivating bhang within a police station compound, before fleeing from fellow officers in a dramatic incident that has since sparked national debate.
The officer, identified as Constable Ramadhan Mwiti Nassir, was stationed at Ngoni Police Post when the unusual discovery was made.
According to reports, colleagues conducting routine checks noticed suspicious plants growing within the police lines, only to confirm that they were cannabis.
The discovery immediately raised alarm among officers, given the strict laws governing narcotic drugs in Kenya. Sources indicate that when confronted, the officer attempted to resist arrest, leading to a brief struggle before he broke free and fled the scene.
A video that has since circulated widely online shows the officer sprinting at high speed as fellow police officers give chase. He reportedly escaped into nearby bushes, evading immediate arrest and prompting a manhunt.
Under Kenya’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, the cultivation and possession of cannabis is a serious criminal offence.
If apprehended and found guilty, the officer could face severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, and dismissal from the National Police Service.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from the public, with many Kenyans expressing disbelief that an officer tasked with enforcing the law could allegedly be involved in illegal drug cultivation — and within a police station at that.
Others have raised concerns about discipline, accountability, and oversight within the police service.
Security experts say the case highlights deeper systemic issues, including the need for stronger internal monitoring and regular inspections within police facilities.
There have also been renewed calls for oversight bodies such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to intensify scrutiny of police conduct across the country.
As the search for the officer continues, authorities are yet to issue a detailed official statement on the incident.
However, the case has already become a talking point nationwide, exposing the irony and seriousness of alleged misconduct within the very institution mandated to uphold the law.
