NYOTA Project Issues Fresh Directive Affecting Ksh 6,000 Youth Stipend Beneficiaries in 13 Counties
The government has issued a new directive targeting thousands of young people who recently completed training under the On-the-Job Experience (OJE) programme, which is part of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Fund.
The move now requires these beneficiaries to go back and revise or reselect their preferred skills, in a step aimed at improving their chances in the job market.
In a public notice released on Thursday, April 30, the NYOTA programme confirmed that the directive specifically affects beneficiaries drawn from 13 counties across the country.
The announcement mainly targets participants who were placed under Lot 1 and Lot 2 categories and had already undergone the Socio-Emotional Skills Development (SESD) training.
According to the notice, these youths are now being given a fresh opportunity to rethink and update their skill choices. NYOTA emphasized that this process is important and encouraged all affected individuals to take it seriously as they await further communication.
“Lot 1 and Lot 2 beneficiaries who have undertaken SESD training, here is your opportunity to revise your skill selection,” the notice explained, highlighting the importance of making informed decisions.
The counties affected by this directive include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, and Homa Bay. Others listed are Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Kisumu, Migori, Siaya, and Vihiga.
This means a significant number of young people across different regions will need to take action to comply with the new instructions.
To revise their skills, beneficiaries have been instructed to dial *254# on their mobile phones, select the OJE programme option, and then follow the prompts to update their skill preferences.
Once they complete this process, they are advised to remain patient and wait for further instructions, which will be sent via SMS from an official NYOTA communication channel.
NYOTA officials explained that allowing beneficiaries to reselect their skills is a strategic decision. It is expected to boost employability by aligning young people’s abilities with current labour market demands.
In addition, the move is meant to improve productivity in workplaces by ensuring that individuals are trained in areas that match their strengths and industry needs.
The reselection process is also seen as a solution to a long-standing challenge where there is often a mismatch between available jobs and the skills that job seekers possess.
By addressing this gap, the programme hopes to support long-term career growth, sustainability, and better economic outcomes for the youth involved.
This latest development comes just days after the beneficiaries successfully completed their OJE training programme.
The training, which ran for six months, was designed to equip young people with practical, hands-on experience in various fields.
During this period, each participant received a monthly stipend of Ksh 6,000 to support their basic needs as they underwent training.
The On-the-Job Experience programme is a key component of the broader NYOTA initiative, which is targeting more than 90,000 young people aged between 18 and 29 years across the country.
Through apprenticeship-based learning, mentorship, certification, and real workplace exposure, the programme aims to prepare youth for employment and self-reliance.
Importantly, the OJE programme is part of the government’s wider Ksh 33 billion plan that seeks to uplift over 800,000 vulnerable youths within the next five years.
This ambitious initiative focuses on providing skills training, mentorship opportunities, and even start-up capital for those interested in entrepreneurship.
With this new directive now in place, affected beneficiaries are expected to act quickly and make the necessary updates, as the government continues to refine the programme to better serve the needs of Kenya’s growing youth population.
