Ruto Announces Salary Increase for Kenyan Workers During Labour Day Celebrations
President William Ruto has announced a major salary increase for workers across Kenya during the 2026 Labour Day celebrations held in Vihiga County.
In a move welcomed by many employees and labour unions, the President revealed that the government has approved a 12 per cent increase in general wages for workers in different sectors, while agricultural workers will receive a higher increase of 15 per cent.
Speaking during the national Labour Day event, President Ruto said the decision was made after workers, through the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), appealed to the government to improve salaries in response to the rising cost of living and economic challenges facing many families across the country.
The Head of State told thousands of workers gathered at the celebrations that his administration remains committed to protecting workers’ rights and improving their welfare.
According to President Ruto, the wage increase is part of the government’s wider plan to support hardworking Kenyans and ensure employees are fairly rewarded for their contribution to the country’s economy.
“I am happy to announce a 12 per cent increase in general wages for all Kenyan workers and a 15 per cent increase in wages for agricultural workers,” President Ruto stated during his speech.
The Labour Day celebrations, which were hosted in Vihiga County for the first time in Kenya’s history, attracted large crowds from different parts of the country.
Workers from both the public and private sectors attended the event, with many expressing hopes that the government would introduce measures to improve salaries, create more job opportunities, and address the increasing economic pressure facing ordinary citizens.
The announcement was received with excitement and applause from workers and union leaders who attended the celebrations.
Many employees have been pushing for better pay due to the high cost of essential commodities, including food, transport, housing, and fuel. Labour unions have also been calling on employers and the government to improve working conditions and ensure workers receive fair compensation.
President Ruto also used the occasion to praise Kenyan workers for their dedication and hard work, saying they continue to play an important role in driving the country’s development.
He noted that sectors such as agriculture remain critical to the economy, which is why agricultural workers were awarded a slightly higher salary increase.
The annual Labour Day celebrations are held every May 1st to honour workers and recognise their contribution to national growth and economic development.
This year’s event in Vihiga County became one of the most significant celebrations in recent years due to the major wage announcement made by the President.
