Probe Launched After Former Parliament Staff Member Killed During Domestic Dispute in Ongata Rongai
Police officers have started investigations following the tragic death of former Parliament chef Kamau Mungai Gathogo, who was allegedly stabbed during a domestic confrontation at his home in Ongata Rongai.
According to reports from investigators, officers who arrived at the scene found Gathogo lying inside his house with severe injuries after the altercation turned violent.
Emergency responders quickly rushed him to Saitoti Hospital for urgent medical attention before doctors referred him to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised treatment due to the seriousness of his condition.
Sadly, he died while being transferred to the referral hospital, a development that prompted detectives to launch immediate investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police also began efforts to trace and gather more details about the people involved in the confrontation.
Ongata Rongai OCPD Benjamin Kiprono confirmed that the deadly incident started as a disagreement inside the house before the situation escalated into violence.
According to the police boss, officers found the victim lying helpless inside his room when they responded to the distress call.
“He was found inside the house with serious injuries and rushed to Saitoti Hospital before being referred to Kenyatta National Hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away before receiving further treatment,” Kiprono stated.
Preliminary findings from investigators suggest that the suspect, who is believed to have visited the deceased at his residence before the incident, allegedly used a kitchen knife that was inside the house during the confrontation. Police believe the argument became physical, eventually leading to the fatal stabbing.
Authorities revealed that the victim sustained a stab wound on the left side of his chest, an injury investigators suspect may have damaged a vital organ, leading to his death.
“It appears to have been a fight that escalated beyond control. From the initial assessment, there was one stab wound on the left side of the chest,” Kiprono explained.
Police have since arrested one suspect in connection with the killing. The suspect remains in custody as detectives continue with investigations ahead of a planned court arraignment.
Investigators are also working to establish more details about the suspect’s background and relationship with the deceased, as authorities say little information is currently available regarding their history.
The shocking incident has once again sparked public debate over the increasing number of domestic violence cases being reported across the country.
In recent months, Kenya has witnessed several violent domestic disputes involving both men and women, raising concerns among human rights groups and members of the public.
A recent report released by Amnesty International Kenya warned that the country is facing a worrying rise in gender-based violence cases.
According to the organisation, reported incidents have increased significantly, with women remaining the most affected victims in many of the cases documented.
The human rights organisation further noted that husbands account for a large percentage of reported femicide cases, making them among the leading perpetrators of violence against women in the country.
The report has renewed calls for stronger awareness campaigns, counselling programmes, and stricter legal action to address the growing crisis of domestic violence in Kenya.
