Kenya Met Forecasts Rain in About 20 Counties Over the Next Five Days
The Kenya Meteorological Service (Kenya Met) has released its latest five-day weather forecast, warning that rainfall will continue in several parts of the country between Friday, June 26, and Tuesday, June 30.
According to the forecast, around 20 counties, mainly in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and Western Kenya, should expect periods of rain, especially during the afternoons and evenings.
Kenya Met said that residents living in these regions should prepare for afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with some areas likely to receive heavier rainfall on Friday and Monday.
Rainfall is expected to reduce slightly on the remaining days, although a few places will still experience showers and thunderstorms.
The counties expected to receive rainfall include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Residents in these counties are encouraged to remain alert, particularly during the afternoon hours when thunderstorms are most likely to develop.
Farmers and people travelling in affected areas are also advised to keep track of the latest weather updates as conditions may change from time to time.
Central Kenya to Experience Light Showers
Kenya Met has also predicted occasional rainfall in parts of Central Kenya. Counties expected to experience light showers include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
According to the forecast, mornings in these areas will generally begin with cloudy conditions before clearing to allow sunny intervals later in the day. However, residents should not be surprised by occasional showers, particularly during the night from Saturday through Tuesday.
Although rainfall in the region is not expected to be widespread, a few locations may receive light showers, making it important for residents to carry umbrellas or rain gear whenever necessary.
Dry Weather Expected in Northwestern Kenya
Unlike the wetter regions, Turkana and Samburu counties in northwestern Kenya are expected to remain largely dry throughout the forecast period.
Kenya Met said the two counties will experience mostly sunny weather, with only a few isolated showers expected on Saturday. For the rest of the five-day period, residents should expect warm and dry conditions.
Southeastern Lowlands to Remain Mostly Sunny
The forecast also indicates that the Southeastern Lowlands, which include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, will continue experiencing mainly dry weather.
These counties are expected to have cloudy mornings, particularly on Friday, before skies gradually clear to sunny conditions later in the day. Kenya Met does not expect any significant rainfall in the region during the five-day forecast period.
The sunny conditions are likely to favour outdoor activities, farming operations that require dry weather, and road travel across the region.
Coastal Region to Receive Light Rainfall
Residents living along Kenya’s Coast should also expect generally favourable weather with only limited rainfall.
The forecast covers Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the Tana Delta, where light showers are expected in a few places on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday.
For the rest of the forecast period, the coastal counties are expected to experience mainly sunny weather, with warm temperatures continuing throughout the day.
Kenya Met Warns of Cold Nights
Apart from the expected rainfall, Kenya Met has also warned that several parts of the country will continue experiencing cold nights over the next five days.
According to the weather agency, temperatures are expected to fall to as low as 5°C, especially in the Central Highlands. The counties likely to experience the coldest nights include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
Night temperatures in these areas are expected to range between 5°C and 6°C, while daytime temperatures will remain comfortable, reaching between 25°C and 27°C.
Residents, particularly children, the elderly, and people with underlying health conditions, are encouraged to keep warm during the night and early morning hours when temperatures are at their lowest.
Moderate Temperatures in Rift Valley and Western Kenya
Meanwhile, Kenya Met said temperatures across the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Western Kenya will remain moderate despite the expected rainfall.
During the day, temperatures are forecast to reach between 29°C and 31°C, providing relatively warm conditions. At night, temperatures are expected to fall to between 9°C and 11°C, creating cool but manageable weather across most parts of the region.
Kenya Met continues to advise Kenyans to stay updated with daily weather forecasts and take the necessary precautions, especially in areas expected to receive heavy afternoon showers and thunderstorms or experience unusually cold night temperatures.
