Senior Police Officer Dies After Head-On Collision Along Machakos–Kitui Road
Inspector Felistus Kateve Mbaluka, the officer in charge of the Makutano Police Patrol Base in Mwala Sub-County, has tragically lost her life following a devastating head-on road accident along the Machakos–Kitui Road in Machakos County.
The fatal accident happened at around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, in the King’atwani area. According to preliminary reports, Inspector Mbaluka was driving her vehicle when it collided head-on with a lorry that was travelling from the opposite direction.
The impact of the collision was extremely severe, leaving her vehicle badly damaged and causing critical injuries.
According to a police report, the senior officer suffered multiple serious injuries as a result of the crash. She sustained fractures on both of her legs, both hands, and also suffered severe injuries to her neck.
The force of the collision caused extensive damage to the front section of her vehicle, showing just how powerful the impact was.
Emergency responders and members of the public quickly launched a rescue operation shortly after the accident. Inspector Mbaluka was removed from the wreckage and rushed to Tumaini Private Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Despite the efforts made by doctors and other medical staff to save her life, she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Following her death, her body was transferred to Montezuma Funeral Home, where it is being preserved as relatives, colleagues, and investigators await a post-mortem examination to establish more details surrounding her death.
While the police officer lost her life in the tragic crash, the driver of the lorry survived the collision. Police confirmed that the lorry driver escaped with only minor injuries despite the seriousness of the accident. Authorities have not disclosed whether the driver received treatment before being questioned as part of the investigation.
Police have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the fatal collision. Investigators are expected to examine several possible contributing factors, including the speed of both vehicles, road conditions at the time of the accident, visibility during the late-night journey, and whether mechanical failure or human error may have played a role.
Images from the accident scene showed the extent of the destruction caused by the crash. Inspector Mbaluka’s vehicle was almost completely destroyed at the front, with the engine compartment crushed beyond recognition.
The windscreen was shattered, while other parts of the vehicle were extensively damaged, highlighting the violent nature of the impact.
In contrast, the white lorry involved in the collision sustained relatively minor damage. Most of its structure remained intact, although some visible damage could be seen on its front section.
Debris from both vehicles was scattered across the road, painting a grim picture of the force with which the two vehicles collided.
Police officials also revealed that Inspector Mbaluka’s death was among at least 10 fatal road accidents that were reported across different parts of the country on the same Sunday night.
The series of deadly crashes has once again raised concerns about road safety and the increasing number of fatal accidents occurring on Kenyan roads.
The latest tragedy comes only days after another deadly road accident claimed the lives of three people and left ten others injured along the Eldoret–Webuye Highway.
That accident happened on the evening of Saturday, June 27, after a speeding trailer reportedly lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle before crashing into a 14-seater matatu carrying passengers.
The growing number of road accidents across the country has renewed public concern over safety on Kenyan highways.
Many Kenyans are now calling on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to strengthen enforcement measures against reckless driving, overspeeding, dangerous overtaking, and other traffic offences that continue to contribute to fatal crashes.
Recent figures released by the NTSA paint a worrying picture of the country’s road safety situation. According to the latest statistics, 2,150 people lost their lives in road accidents during the first six months of 2026, representing an 11 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.
The data further shows that pedestrians remained the most affected group, accounting for 836 deaths. Motorcyclists recorded the second-highest number of fatalities, while passengers ranked third with 318 deaths. Drivers also continued to be affected, with 188 motorists losing their lives in road crashes during the same period.
The latest statistics underline the urgent need for stronger road safety measures, increased public awareness, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to help reduce the rising number of accidents and save lives across the country.
