In a detailed statement on Thursday, Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli provided reasons for the raid on Jimi Wanjigi’s Muthaiga residence.
The police boss called on businessman Jimi Wanjigi to surrender himself to the police for questioning.
This appeal comes after police recovered several items linked to criminal activities from a Toyota Prado TX associated with Wanjigi.
The vehicle was found parked at the entrance to his Muthaiga home in Nairobi.
“Today, we intercepted a personal motor vehicle at the residence of Jimi Wanjigi in Muthaiga. In the vehicle, we have recovered four teargas canisters, two Motorola gadgets, seven assorted chargers for pocket phones, and one mobile phone,” Masengeli stated.
“We are actively looking for Wanjigi and urge him to present himself to the nearest police station.”
The police also reported that armed officers surrounded and cordoned off Wanjigi’s Muthaiga residence on Thursday afternoon following a brief chase.
Witnesses indicated that a suspicious vehicle sped to Wanjigi’s home, where its occupants disembarked and entered the compound.
Masengeli added that Wanjigi was allegedly seen distributing money to people, purportedly to support ongoing protests.
He claimed that the businessman had facilitated protesters being dropped off at Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and was on board one of the vehicles involved.
Police further claimed that Wanjigi had been spotted along Limuru Road with a group, distributing money before fleeing into Karura Forest.
The Prado TX, which was being inspected outside Wanjigi’s residence, has since been towed to Nairobi Central Police Station.
One suspect has been arrested, but Wanjigi remains at large.
In response to the allegations, Wanjigi has denied any wrongdoing and criticized the police action as harassment.
