Police Shoot and Kill Two Protesters During Mbeere North Hospital Demonstrations
At least two people have been confirmed dead after protests in Mbeere North turned tragic on Tuesday, April 14, following violent clashes between demonstrators and police officers.
The victims were reportedly among a group of young people who had taken to the streets to protest the poor and worsening condition of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.
Residents said they were frustrated by what they described as years of neglect at the health facility, which serves a large number of people in the area.
The demonstrations caused major disruption for most of the day, with sections of the road becoming completely impassable.
Protesters blocked parts of the busy Embu Highway using large stones and other objects, bringing transport to a standstill and forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.
Tensions rose sharply later in the afternoon when police officers moved in to disperse the crowd and reopen the road. According to reports from the scene, the protesters resisted the police action, leading to a heated confrontation.
The standoff quickly escalated into chaos, with both sides engaging in running battles. During the clash, it is alleged that police officers fired live bullets, leaving two protesters dead.
The protest was largely fueled by growing anger over the current state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, which has in recent weeks come under intense criticism from residents, local leaders, and ward representatives.
As recently as April 10, elected leaders from the area had openly warned that the situation at the hospital had become unsustainable and required urgent intervention.
Much of the public outrage has been driven by viral photos shared widely on social media, showing the hospital’s badly damaged and neglected infrastructure.
Some of the images revealed leaking and broken roofs in several wards, cracked walls, and general poor maintenance, raising serious concerns about the safety of both patients and healthcare workers.
Because the hospital is considered a key primary care facility in the region, many local residents depend on it for essential treatment and emergency services.
This has made the state of the hospital an emotional issue for the community, with many now demanding accountability from the county government.
Residents are also calling for immediate renovations and a full upgrade of the facility to restore public confidence.
This latest shooting marks the second deadly protest-related incident reported in April. It comes only weeks after two other protesters were shot dead by police in Siaya during another tense confrontation.
In the Siaya incident, the victims were part of a group that had allegedly attempted to storm a police post while protesting claims of eviction from a profitable gold mining site. Police officers reportedly opened fire while trying to disperse the angry crowd, resulting in two deaths.
The rising number of such incidents comes at a time when concerns are growing over increased cases of violence and goonism reported in different parts of the country throughout April.
On Sunday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that he had given Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja full authority to deal firmly with goonism, assuring him of the Interior Ministry’s complete support in restoring law and order.
The Mbeere North incident is now likely to pile more pressure on both county and national authorities, as residents demand justice for the deceased protesters while also pushing for urgent action to improve the poor state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.
