Azimio leader Raila Odinga has pledged inclusive leadership amidst his bid for the African Union Commission chair.
During his address at Chungwa House while meeting with organizers of the Limuru III conference, Raila Odinga affirmed his commitment to collaborate with government officials, extending his willingness to work alongside Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“I will work with everybody in this country. Nobody specifically. DP Gachagua is a member of the government and on Wednesday, they said they will support my bid for AU. I thank them,” stated Odinga.
The government has established a comprehensive secretariat dedicated to bolstering support for Raila’s bid.
Tasked with overseeing the day-to-day coordination of his campaign endeavors leading up to the February 2024 election, “the Secretariat comprises top government officials, experts, and members of Raila’s campaign team,” stated Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Wednesday.
He emphasized that Raila’s candidacy for the AU chairmanship is based on his relevant credentials, emphasizing that the decision transcends local politics.
Raila expressed gratitude towards the government for backing his candidacy, remarking that the support came unexpectedly.
Raila is competing against three other contenders from the Eastern Africa region for the chairmanship.
These include Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Youssouf, Somalia’s former Deputy Prime Minister and current Federal Parliament member Fawzia Yusuf, and Seychelles’s former Vice President Vincent Meriton.
The chairmanship is designated for the Eastern Africa region in the polls, while the vice chairperson position is reserved for Northern Africa.
All candidates aim to succeed Moussa Faki from Chad. The victorious candidate will serve a four-year term.
