Kenya is home to many successful businesspeople and entrepreneurs who have built their wealth through dedication, hard work, and smart investments. Over the years, these individuals have made a significant mark not only in Kenya but across the globe.

Today, the country boasts numerous billionaires and millionaires who have invested in diverse sectors of the economy, from technology to agriculture, manufacturing, and finance.

Who is the Richest Person in Kenya in 2024?

According to recent reports, the richest person in Kenya in 2024 is Sameer Merali.

Sameer Merali’s Net Worth and Wealth

Sameer Merali currently stands as Kenya’s wealthiest individual. He is the son of the late business tycoon Dr. Naushad Noorali Merali, a legendary entrepreneur whose business acumen made headlines for generations. According to a report by Nairobi Leo, Sameer’s estimated net worth is around $790 million.

After the passing of his father, Sameer took over the family’s business empire, which spans multiple sectors, including information technology, agriculture, manufacturing, and many more.

Under his leadership, the Merali business group continues to grow and maintain its strong influence both locally and internationally.

Sameer Merali’s Educational Background

Sameer has a strong educational foundation that helped shape his business skills. He first pursued a Bachelor of Science in Management Sciences at King’s College in London, United Kingdom.

Determined to further strengthen his expertise, he later earned a Master of Science degree in Banking and International Finance from the City University Business School in London.

Following his studies, Sameer began his career at Merrill International Bank Limited. After gaining valuable experience in the finance sector, he joined his father’s company three years later, bringing his knowledge and fresh perspective to the family business.

When Dr. Naushad Noorali Merali Made Shs 1.6 Billion in an Hour

The late Dr. Naushad Noorali Merali built his wealth through years of strategic and clever business deals. One of the most notable moments in his career occurred when he earned a staggering Shs 1.6 billion in just one hour.

According to Kenyans.co.ke, this historic profit came from a shrewd investment in the telecommunications industry. By the year 2000, Dr. Naushad owned approximately 40% of Airtel Kenya, while the French company Vivendi held the remaining 60%.

In 2004, Vivendi decided to exit the market, creating a perfect opportunity for Dr. Naushad. He convinced the company to sell him their 60% stake for Sh230 billion.

Within just one hour, he made an even smarter move by selling that same stake to Mo Ibrahim’s Africa-focused Celtel, securing a massive profit of Shs 1.6 billion.

This deal is remembered as one of the most remarkable moments in Kenya’s corporate history, showcasing Dr. Naushad’s unmatched business intuition and sharp decision-making.
