Morara Kebaso, a lawyer and political activist, has occupied Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) following his release on a Ksh 50,000 cash bail.

He was arrested and charged with cyber harassment under Kenya’s Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

The charges stem from allegations that he posted false information accusing businessman David Langat of shady dealings with President William Ruto.

Kebaso claims the arrest was politically motivated, pointing to his outspoken criticism of government officials, which has often made him a target for such actions.

Following his release, Kebaso has remained vocal, drawing attention to issues surrounding political repression, corruption, and the state’s intimidation of activists.

His occupation of Nairobi’s CBD highlights his protest against what he perceives as an abuse of power. His case has attracted widespread attention, with many calling it a test of the government’s tolerance for dissenting voices.

Amnesty International and other human rights groups have condemned his arrest, arguing it undermines freedom of expression and the right to hold leaders accountable.

The situation continues to develop as Kebaso awaits a court ruling on October 4, 2024, to determine whether he will face formal charges. Public protests in support of his activism may escalate as the case unfolds.
