Narok Senator Ledama Olekina Offers Support to Youths Eyeing 2027 Political Seats
Ledama Olekina, the Senator for Narok County, has announced a new initiative aimed at empowering young people who wish to run for elective positions in the 2027 General Election, despite admitting that he currently does not have enough financial resources to fully fund such ambitions.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms on Tuesday, March 24, the outspoken legislator invited young Kenyans with leadership ambitions to come forward and express their interest.
His goal, he explained, is to help nurture and guide a new generation of leaders who can bring fresh ideas and energy into the country’s political space.
The senator specifically encouraged individuals aged between 22 and 35 years to reach out, particularly those who have the passion and vision to serve but are held back by a lack of financial means to kickstart their campaigns.
He acknowledged that politics in Kenya can be expensive and often discouraging for young aspirants, which is why mentorship and support are necessary.
According to Olekina, those who qualify for this opportunity should have an academic background in fields such as Political Science, Communication, Social Development, or Finance.
He stressed that education plays a key role in shaping effective leaders who can understand governance, policy-making, and community development.
However, the offer is not open to all regions. The senator clarified that his focus will be on youths from five counties—Narok County, Kajiado County, Samburu County, Laikipia County, and Marsabit County.
He said this targeted approach is meant to ensure he can closely mentor and support a manageable group of aspiring leaders from these regions.
In his message, Olekina encouraged interested youths to take the bold step and connect with him, promising to walk with them through their leadership journey.
He emphasised that the initiative is not just about financial assistance, but also about mentorship, strategic guidance, and helping them turn their ideas into realistic and competitive political campaigns.
“Let’s take this journey together and see how we can transform your leadership dreams into reality,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to supporting young people who are ready to serve.
This announcement comes at a time when more young Kenyans are showing interest in participating in leadership and governance.
Many youths across the country have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with long-serving leaders, arguing that it is time for a new generation to take charge and address pressing national issues with fresh perspectives.
Among those already stepping forward is Mike Gumo, the son of veteran politician Fred Gumo, who has expressed his intention to contest for the Westlands Constituency parliamentary seat.
Similarly, Brian Midiwo has declared his bid for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat, further demonstrating the growing confidence among young leaders to seek public office.
This rising wave of youth participation is being driven in large part by social media platforms, which have become powerful tools for mobilisation and civic education. Campaigns led by young people are gaining traction online, encouraging more individuals to become politically aware and actively involved.
One of the most notable movements is the “Niko Kadi” campaign, which has gone viral across the country. The initiative is pushing young Kenyans to register as voters and take part in shaping the country’s future through the ballot.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, initiatives like Olekina’s could play a significant role in breaking financial and structural barriers that have long prevented young people from entering politics, potentially paving the way for a more inclusive and representative leadership landscape in Kenya.
