Following his recent defeat in the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson election, former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has graciously conceded and extended his congratulations to the victor, Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.

The election, held on February 15, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, saw Youssouf secure the position after seven rounds of voting.

In his concession speech, Odinga expressed gratitude to both his supporters and those who did not vote for him, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes in Africa.

He stated, “I want to thank all those who voted for me and those who didn’t because of exercising their democracy.”

President William Ruto, who accompanied Odinga during the election, also acknowledged the outcome.

He expressed appreciation to the African leaders who participated in the election and congratulated Youssouf on his victory.

Ruto noted, “While the outcome of this election did not favour Kenya’s candidate, I wish to convey my deepest gratitude to the entire leadership of our great continent.”

The election process was highly competitive. Odinga led in the initial rounds, securing 20 votes in the first round and 22 in the second.

However, Youssouf gained momentum in subsequent rounds, ultimately achieving the required two-thirds majority with 33 votes in the seventh round.

Despite the loss, Odinga remains optimistic and committed to serving the continent in other capacities.

He mentioned plans to return home but affirmed his availability to contribute to Africa’s progress wherever needed. This sentiment reflects his enduring dedication to the continent’s development and unity.

Analysts have highlighted several factors that may have influenced the election’s outcome. These include regional alliances, linguistic blocs, and Kenya’s recent foreign policy positions.

For instance, diplomatic tensions arising from Kenya’s handling of regional conflicts and its stance on international issues may have swayed member states’ voting decisions.

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, the newly elected AUC Chairperson, has been Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2005.

His extensive diplomatic experience and commitment to addressing Africa’s security challenges were pivotal in garnering support from member states.

Youssouf emphasized the need for African-led solutions to the continent’s issues, advocating for reduced dependency on external interventions.

As the African Union transitions to new leadership, the focus remains on fostering unity, promoting democratic values, and addressing pressing challenges such as peace and security.

Both Odinga’s gracious concession and Youssouf’s election underscore the continent’s commitment to democratic principles and collaborative progress.

In summary, while Raila Odinga did not secure the AUC chairperson position, his positive response and continued dedication to Africa’s development exemplify the spirit of leadership and service.

The election of Mahamoud Ali Youssouf marks a new chapter for the African Union, with hopes pinned on strengthened unity and effective solutions to the continent’s challenges.
