Full List of Grade 10 Subject Combinations for CBC Career Pathways – Selection Deadline June 30

For the next three weeks, schools, parents, and guardians will play a vital role in guiding Grade 9 learners as they make one of the most important academic decisions in their CBC journey—selecting subject combinations for their Grade 10 career pathways, which they will join next year.

Under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), approximately 1.2 million students will be the first group to join Senior School, where they will choose from three main career pathways:

  1. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics),
  2. Arts and Sports,
  3. Social Sciences.

Regardless of the pathway chosen, certain core subjects remain mandatory, including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and Community Service Learning.

The Ministry of Education has officially released the detailed list of subject combinations available within five career tracks:

  • STEM (Applied Sciences),
  • STEM (Pure Sciences),
  • STEM (Technical Studies),
  • Arts & Sports,
  • Social Sciences.

🔹 Arts & Sports Pathway

This pathway focuses on creative, performance, and physical development subjects. Students can tailor their choices around their talents and interests.

  • Theatre, Film & Fine Arts: Students can select Arabic, Biology, Business Studies, Computer Studies, CRE/IRE/HRE, Fasihi ya Kiswahili, French, General Science, Geography, German, History & Citizenship, English Literature, Mandarin, Advanced Mathematics, or Sports & Recreation as complementary subjects.
  • Music & Dance with Fine Arts: Learners choosing this track can also add any of the above subjects to support their creative skills.
  • Theatre & Film, Music & Dance: Students interested in combining these creative fields may also choose from the same wide range of support subjects listed.
  • Sports & Recreation: Those leaning toward physical education can add Media Technology alongside the usual options such as Arabic, Biology, Business Studies, and others.

🔹 Social Sciences Pathway

This track is ideal for students interested in human behavior, society, business, and languages.

  • Business Studies & History & Citizenship: Students can complement with Arabic, Computer Studies, CRE/IRE/HRE, Fasihi ya Kiswahili, French, General Science, Geography, German, English Literature, Mandarin, or Advanced Mathematics.
  • CRE/IRE/HRE & Business Studies: Add-on subjects include similar options as above, supporting spiritual, ethical, and commercial understanding.
  • CRE/IRE/HRE & Geography: Learners can further enrich their studies with subjects such as General Science, Literature, or a foreign language.
  • History & Citizenship & Geography: A strong combo for those eyeing roles in leadership, politics, or global studies. Additional subject options remain wide.
  • Arabic & French (Languages & Literature track): Learners may take Business Studies, Computer Studies, CRE/IRE/HRE, General Science, Geography, History & Citizenship, Mandarin, or Advanced Mathematics to broaden their global communication skills.
  • Fasihi ya Kiswahili & Sign Language: Students can add Arabic, Chinese, Business Studies, Computer Studies, or any other listed options.
  • Indigenous Language & English Literature: This combination helps preserve culture while enhancing literary skills. Add-ons include Mandarin, History, or Sign Language, among others.

🔹 STEM – Applied Sciences

Best for students interested in blending scientific knowledge with practical applications.

  • Agriculture & Business Studies: Can be combined with Aviation, Biology, Building Construction, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Electricity, Marine & Fisheries, General Science, Geography, Advanced Mathematics, Metal Work, Physics, Power Mechanics, or Woodwork.
  • Agriculture & Computer Studies: Students can pick from a similar pool of practical and technical subjects, including Home Science.
  • Agriculture & Geography: Pairs well with technical subjects like Power Mechanics and Metal Work, preparing students for agribusiness or environmental careers.

🔹 STEM – Pure Sciences

This is a more academic and research-oriented route for science lovers.

  • Advanced Mathematics & Biology: Learners can choose extra subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Marine & Fisheries, or Woodwork to create a solid science foundation.
  • Biology & Chemistry: Perfect for future medical or biological sciences professionals. Additional options include Business Studies and Aviation.
  • Chemistry & Physics: Ideal for those aiming for engineering or technology careers. Can be supported by Building Construction, Marine Studies, and other technical subjects.

🔹 STEM – Technical Studies

Focused on vocational and hands-on skills, this pathway is great for learners interested in trades and applied tech.

  • Aviation & Business Studies: Students can enrich this combo with Physics, Marine & Fisheries, General Science, or Media Technology.
  • Building Construction & Business Studies: Additional subjects like Home Science and Advanced Math prepare students for the construction or real estate sector.
  • Electricity & General Science: Can be paired with Computer Studies, Media Technology, or Marine & Fisheries, offering a robust base for tech-based trades.

📅 Deadline for Subject Selection: June 30

According to Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok, the process of subject selection for all Grade 9 learners will officially close on June 30. All parents, teachers, and students are advised to ensure timely and informed decision-making to align students’ choices with their passions and future goals.

This structured and flexible CBC model is designed to help each student develop their strengths, talents, and interests while preparing them for meaningful participation in society and the workforce.
