Authorities have intensified their crackdown on individuals involved in the violent demonstrations and widespread looting that took place across Kenya during the June 25 protests.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed on Sunday, June 29, that several suspects had been arrested following well-coordinated operations in various counties.
In Mbeere South, detectives managed to arrest two individuals and recovered a white water tank with metal reinforcements.
The DCI revealed that this tank was part of the property looted from Kiritiri Market during the height of the nationwide protests, which turned chaotic and destructive in many areas.
In other parts of the country, particularly in Kikuyu and Dagoretti, DCI officers intercepted a Nissan matatu believed to have been used by a group of suspects to transport stolen goods and coordinate violent attacks.
According to the investigators, the vehicle was allegedly used to ferry individuals from Gachui-Mutuini to Dagoretti Centre.
During the unrest in Dagoretti, suspects reportedly attacked a police post, set it on fire, and made away with firearms and police uniforms. Several police officers sustained injuries during these violent incidents.
The DCI further disclosed that four suspects were arrested for allegedly planning and mobilising the group that caused the destruction and chaos.
One breakthrough in the investigations came after detectives reviewed CCTV footage showing one of the suspects openly carrying a stolen firearm, which helped in tracking down the group involved.
In Mai Mahiu, another group of seven suspects was apprehended in connection with the looting of a popular hotel. The stolen items included packets of maize flour and other food supplies, as confirmed by images released by the DCI.
All the individuals arrested are currently undergoing legal procedures and are expected to face several criminal charges. These include theft, assaulting law enforcement officers, and malicious destruction of property.
In a related operation, the DCI reported that three individuals were arrested on Friday for allegedly inciting violence and organising gangs to participate in the protests on June 25.
Just a day earlier, 24 more suspects were captured in connection with the burning of the Kikuyu Law Courts, the Kikuyu Sub-County administrative offices, and other government buildings during the Wednesday demonstrations.
Authorities have emphasized that investigations are still ongoing, and more arrests are expected as the crackdown on those responsible for the violence and destruction continues.
