ODM Announces Youth Leadership Amid Controversy Over Kasmuel’s Role

ODM Addresses Confusion Over Youth League Leadership Amid Questions About Kasmuel’s Role

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has moved to clear the air after growing speculation about who currently holds the position of President of the ODM Youth League.

This comes after a document distributed during an ODM event in Mombasa caused confusion by listing political activist Samuel McOure as the Youth League President.

In a statement released on Saturday morning, the party dismissed the information contained in the publication as completely false and misleading. ODM firmly stated that Johnmark Ketorah remains the legitimate President of the Youth League, and no such changes had been made.

“The President of the ODM Youth League is Honourable Johnmark Ketorah. Ignore any publication circulating containing misleading information on the same,” the party said in its official statement.

The clarification followed concerns raised by party members who received the questionable publication during ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa County on Friday, November 14.

The document listed McOure and several other individuals as occupying various leadership positions within the party, raising doubts about the authenticity of the newsletter and questions regarding ODM’s formal organisational structure.

Samuel McOure was specifically listed as the Youth League President, an entry that sparked debate both within the party and among the public. Many wondered whether ODM had quietly reshuffled its youth leadership or whether the publication was produced without official approval.

Although McOure has been widely recognised as an active youth mobiliser and a strong supporter of the party, he has not been appointed to any major leadership role so far.

In 2024, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga appointed him to serve as part of ODM’s youth and student league team, where he has mainly been involved in helping to mobilise young people and support the party’s broader vision.

On the other hand, Johnmark Ketorah, the current Youth League President, has held the position for years. He was officially appointed to the role in 2016 by ODM’s National Executive Council (NEC) after being recommended by his fellow youth leaders.

Since taking up the position, Ketorah has played a significant role in guiding young members and strengthening youth engagement within the party.

ODM’s clarification also comes shortly after the party announced major changes within its senior leadership structure. Earlier this week, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga was approved as the new party leader.

The council also endorsed Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and Vihiga Senator Geoffrey Osoti to serve as deputy party leaders—moves that signal a continued reshaping of ODM’s leadership as it prepares for future political seasons.
