Several Feared Trapped as Building Collapses in Nairobi
A tragic incident unfolded in Nairobi on Wednesday afternoon after a building collapsed in the Highrise area of Kibera, leaving several people feared trapped beneath the rubble.
In the latest update issued on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at least three people have sadly been confirmed dead, while several others are still missing as rescue efforts continue at the scene.
Nairobi Chief County Officer in charge of Disaster Management, Bramwel Simiyu, confirmed the deaths and said that six other victims were successfully rescued from the debris before being rushed to Mbagathi Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
According to Simiyu, the bodies recovered so far belong to three middle-aged men, highlighting the seriousness of the disaster and the difficult work facing rescue teams on the ground.
Reports from the Kenya Red Cross indicate that the collapsed structure was still under construction when it suddenly caved in at around 2:00 pm.
Emergency responders, including Red Cross rescue teams, county disaster officers, firefighters, police, and medical personnel, quickly arrived at the site and immediately launched search and rescue operations.
The main focus remains locating anyone who may still be trapped under the heavy concrete and twisted metal.
The incident was first confirmed by the Kenya Red Cross Society through an official statement, which noted that emergency teams had already been dispatched to the Highrise section of Kibera.
The humanitarian agency explained that the exact number of people trapped was not immediately known, but multiple individuals were feared to be buried under the debris.
Rescue efforts intensified as first responders worked carefully to remove the rubble while trying to avoid causing further collapse.
This latest tragedy comes amid growing concern over the rising number of building collapses reported across Nairobi and other parts of the country in recent months.
The city has witnessed several similar incidents involving structures that were either under construction or undergoing demolition, raising serious questions about safety compliance and enforcement standards in the construction sector.
Just three weeks ago, another building collapse in Westlands claimed one life and left several others injured after a 22-storey structure under construction suddenly came down.
According to police reports, four workers were inside the building when it collapsed, leading to another painful rescue mission.
Earlier in January, a 16-storey building under construction in South C also collapsed, killing two people and sparking public outrage over continued negligence in the sector.
Engineers and construction experts have repeatedly blamed the increasing number of such incidents on a mix of developer negligence, use of substandard materials, poor workmanship, weak supervision, and failures in regulatory oversight.
During World Engineering Day on March 5, 2026, leaders from the Institute of Engineers of Kenya warned that while some professionals may share responsibility, most of the blame lies with developers who ignore approved standards in pursuit of profit.
The collapse in Kibera once again puts the spotlight on Nairobi’s growing construction crisis, with many residents now demanding stricter inspections, accountability for rogue developers, and stronger enforcement from county authorities to prevent more avoidable deaths.
As rescue efforts continue into the evening, families of those feared trapped remain anxiously gathered near the site, hoping for more survivors to be pulled from the ruins.
