Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains in Five Regions This Weekend
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather advisory warning that several parts of the country should prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall over the next five days, starting Friday through Tuesday next week.
The regions expected to be most affected include Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Central Kenya, and the Coastal belt.
According to the latest outlook, the heaviest rainfall is likely to be felt this weekend in Western Kenya, parts of the Rift Valley, and areas surrounding Lake Victoria.
In many of these places, the rain is expected to come with thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening hours after periods of sunshine and cloudy intervals.
Counties likely to receive the most significant rainfall include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Residents in these counties are advised to remain alert, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, low-lying zones, or places near rivers and streams where water levels may rise quickly.
In Central Kenya, the department has also predicted continued rainfall, although the intensity is expected to be moderate compared to the western side of the country.
Counties expected to receive these rains include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi.
These areas are likely to experience light showers in the morning and afternoon, with occasional heavier downpours during some nights over the five-day forecast period.
A similar weather pattern is expected along the Coast, where counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, together with the Tana Delta region, are forecast to receive light to moderate rainfall.
The showers in these areas may also increase during the afternoon as sea breeze conditions strengthen moisture movement inland.
However, not every part of the country will be wet. The South-eastern lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta are expected to remain mostly sunny, warm, and dry throughout the forecast period.
This means residents in these counties may continue experiencing dry weather despite widespread rainfall in other regions.
Temperature Advisory
The weather department has also warned of chilly nights in several parts of the country. Nighttime temperatures could fall to as low as 6°C in counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
These cold conditions are also expected in parts of Western Kenya and the Rift Valley, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Kericho, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Bungoma.
At the same time, daytime temperatures are expected to rise above 30°C in the Coast region, South-eastern lowlands, North-eastern Kenya, and North-western Kenya, creating a sharp contrast between cool nights and hot afternoons in different parts of the country.
Marine Forecast
For residents and fishermen along the Coast, the marine outlook shows light to breezy southern to south-westerly winds during the morning, with wind speeds ranging between 2.57 and 9.77 metres per second.
Sea conditions are expected to remain slight to moderately wavy in counties such as Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu.
As the day progresses into the afternoon, the forecast indicates light to breezy southern winds of about 4.12 to 7.20 metres per second, with sea waters remaining slightly to moderately rough.
Those planning marine activities are encouraged to monitor local advisories closely, especially as weather conditions can change quickly when coastal showers intensify.
Overall, the five-day forecast points to a wet weekend and start of the week for a large part of Kenya, with the possibility of thunderstorms, cold nights, and rougher sea conditions in some areas.
Residents are encouraged to plan their travel carefully, avoid flooded roads, and keep following updates from Kenya Met for any changes in the forecast.
