U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert Over Planned Nairobi Protests
The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has released a fresh security advisory warning its citizens about planned demonstrations expected to take place in Nairobi.
The alert comes amid growing public concern over rising fuel prices and broader governance issues that have sparked online mobilisation calls.
In a notice dated Monday, April 20, the embassy said it had received credible information indicating that groups were organising protests through social media platforms.
These demonstrations were expected to take place on Tuesday, April 21, with participants likely to gather in different parts of the capital.
According to the advisory, the embassy cautioned that such protests could significantly disrupt movement across the city.
It warned that major roads, highways, and key intersections within Nairobi could be blocked by demonstrators, leading to serious traffic congestion and delays.
Motorists and pedestrians were therefore advised to prepare for possible gridlock, especially within busy areas of the city.
At the same time, the embassy raised concerns about the potential for the demonstrations to turn chaotic or violent. It pointed out that similar protests in the past have sometimes escalated, with police responding using tear gas and, in extreme cases, live ammunition.
Because of this history, the embassy urged its citizens to remain highly alert and avoid any situation that could place them at risk.
Part of the advisory read that demonstrations, strikes, and protests related to political or economic issues are not unusual, and they can change quickly depending on how events unfold on the ground.
The embassy emphasized that even peaceful gatherings can become unpredictable without warning.
The U.S. Department of State also reinforced the message by advising American nationals in Kenya to take extra precautions.
Citizens were encouraged to avoid crowds and steer clear of protest areas altogether. They were further advised to keep a close eye on local news updates to stay informed about any developments.
Additional safety measures included maintaining a high level of personal security at all times. The advisory recommended keeping car doors locked and windows rolled up when driving through areas that may be affected.
It also stressed the importance of carrying identification documents at all times, including a passport copy and a valid Kenyan visa, in case of any security checks.
Despite the earlier warnings and expectations of widespread demonstrations, the situation on the ground appeared largely calm at the time of reporting.
In many parts of the country, including major towns and cities, normal daily activities continued without interruption. There were no significant reports of protests or large crowds gathering in the streets.
Within Nairobi’s Central Business District, a spot check indicated a strong presence of security personnel. Anti-riot police officers had been deployed in strategic areas such as Kimathi Street, which has historically been a hotspot for anti-government protests.
Their presence suggested that authorities were taking precautionary steps to manage any potential unrest before it could escalate.
However, in other parts of the city, including major roads like Kenyatta Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, Moi Avenue, Parliament Road, and City Hall Way, business activities were going on as usual.
While there was still a noticeable presence of regular police officers, there were no visible signs of active demonstrations or disruptions.
Weather conditions may also have played a role in the calm situation, as heavy rains continued to fall across Nairobi’s CBD from early morning hours. The downpour appeared to limit movement in some areas, possibly discouraging large gatherings.
A similar scenario was observed in Mombasa, where daily operations proceeded normally. Major highways remained open and functional, although there were small groups of anti-riot police officers stationed in different locations alongside routine patrol units.
This indicated that security agencies across the country were maintaining a state of readiness while monitoring the situation closely.
Overall, while the anticipated protests had not yet materialised in a major way, both the embassy and local authorities continued to urge caution.
The situation remains fluid, and residents as well as visitors have been advised to stay informed and prioritise their safety as events continue to unfold.
