High School Closed Indefinitely Just Days After Reopening
Mirithu Girls Secondary School has been closed indefinitely after a devastating dormitory fire destroyed one of the school’s main boarding facilities. The incident happened shortly after students had returned to school for the new term.
Following the fire, the school management sent a notice asking parents and guardians to report to the school on Thursday, April 30, and collect their children as authorities assess the damage and determine the next steps.
Parents who spoke after receiving the communication said they were not informed when learning would resume. Many expressed concern because the destroyed dormitory was an important facility used to accommodate students, making it difficult for the school to continue normal operations immediately.
One parent said they only received instructions to pick up their children, but no timeline was given for reopening. This uncertainty has left many families worried about disruptions to the academic calendar and the students’ progress.
Several parents also voiced fears that they may be required to contribute extra money for repairs or reconstruction once the school reopens. Many explained that schools had just resumed after the holiday break, and some families were still struggling to clear second-term school fees.
They urged the administration to avoid placing any additional financial burden on parents, especially during a time when many households are already facing economic challenges.
At the same time, parents are demanding a full and transparent investigation into the cause of the fire. They said students need reassurance that the school environment will remain safe before they can confidently return.
Some parents noted that unless the cause of the fire is clearly established and preventive measures put in place, students may continue living in fear of another similar incident.
Families also appealed to well-wishers, leaders, and charitable organisations to support efforts to rebuild the destroyed dormitory.
They said most parents cannot afford to finance reconstruction on their own, and delays could cause students to lose valuable learning time while learners in other schools continue with classes.
Meanwhile, less than a day after the Mirithu Girls incident, another fire was reported at Dr. Aggrey High School.
According to Kenya Red Cross, a major blaze broke out at the school, causing panic as students and teachers rushed to safety while others attempted to help contain the flames.
Images shared after the incident showed thick smoke rising from a building believed to be classrooms as the fire spread rapidly.
This is not the first time the school has experienced such a tragedy. In 2025, the institution was temporarily closed after two dormitories were destroyed by another fire in February, forcing all students to return home.
