Cleophas Malala Alleges Police Brutality After Driver Is Beaten by OCPD and Officers
Deputy Party Leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Cleophas Malala, has spoken out about a disturbing incident in which his driver was allegedly subjected to a violent assault over the weekend by police officers, including the Kakamega Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD).
In a detailed statement posted on social media, the former Kakamega Senator claimed that four officers—among them the Kakamega OCPD—trailed his official vehicle. After discovering that Malala himself was not in the car, they allegedly turned their focus to the driver.
Malala says the officers ordered his driver out of the vehicle and began beating him with the butt of a gun, leaving him seriously injured and bleeding.
“They forced the vehicle to stop, and when they realised I was not on board, they tried to coerce my driver into driving to an unknown location. When he declined, they beat him brutally using the gun’s barrel, leaving him bleeding heavily,” Malala explained.
He further claimed that the injured driver was detained at the Kakamega Central Police Station for several hours without being allowed any medical help.
It was only after prolonged illegal detention, Malala said, that the officers finally escorted the driver to Kakamega General Hospital, but even then, they tried to cover their tracks.
“Shockingly, these officers attempted to delete photos and videos from his phone, presumably to erase any evidence of the assault. Luckily, they failed,” he added.
Malala also shared graphic photos of his driver to support his claims. The images showed the man with a bloody forehead and torn clothes. His grey blazer and black shirt were stained with blood, further pointing to the severity of the beating.
Condemning the incident, Malala called it a blatant abuse of power, stating that the matter has already been reported to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for investigation and possible disciplinary action.
“This is a shameful act of police brutality. These are the very people who are supposed to protect citizens, yet they have now become the aggressors. We cannot allow such acts to go unpunished. We have filed a formal complaint with IPOA,” Malala stated firmly.
Interestingly, Malala did not mention any reason for the pursuit by the police, and it remains unclear why the officers were targeting him in the first place.
After he posted the images on Facebook, they quickly gained traction and spread across social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).
However, some users mistakenly identified the photos as belonging to the late Albert Ojwang, a popular online figure who recently died under suspicious circumstances after allegedly being held in a police cell at Nairobi’s Central Police Station.
Ojwang had reportedly been arrested in Homa Bay and transferred to Nairobi for allegedly tarnishing the image of the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat. His mysterious death raised serious concerns and public outrage regarding the treatment of individuals in police custody.
The latest incident involving Malala’s driver now adds to the growing list of complaints and controversies surrounding police conduct in Kenya. It has sparked renewed calls for reform, accountability, and stronger civilian oversight of law enforcement agencies.
In his concluding remarks, Malala stressed that such acts of lawlessness must be addressed immediately to restore public trust in the police. “We will not be silenced or intimidated,” he said. “This country belongs to all of us, and justice must prevail.”
