Wambui Nyutu has officially been dismissed from her position as Vice Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) after being accused of repeatedly involving herself in partisan political matters—despite holding a non-political public office.
The announcement was made by NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, following a Special Commission Meeting specifically called to review and deliberate on Nyutu’s conduct.
According to Kobia, the commission reached a unanimous decision to remove Nyutu from her leadership role due to her continued engagement with politicians and political events, which directly violated both her oath of office and the legal expectations of neutrality set by the commission’s mandate.
“The Commission unanimously resolved to relieve Ms. Nyutu of her role as Vice Chairperson of the Commission with immediate effect,” Kobia said in an official statement released after the meeting.
This decision did not come as a surprise to many observers, as Nyutu had already come under scrutiny earlier in the year.
The commission had previously convened three separate meetings to evaluate her conduct following several public appearances where she made statements and took positions that were considered politically aligned.
Initially, Nyutu is said to have apologized to the Commission and pledged to stay away from any future political involvement. However, according to the NCIC, she later went against her own commitment and continued to participate in political activities and meetings linked to a specific political party.
“At its meeting on 22nd July, 2025, the Commission noted with deep concern that Ms. Wambui Nyutu has since been involved in partisan political activities, including participation in meetings affiliated with a particular political party,” Kobia emphasized during the announcement.
As a result, the commission has decided to trigger her official removal by invoking Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N). This section allows for the dismissal of a commissioner when evidence of misconduct or breach of law is presented.
Although the commission did not list specific incidents in the statement, Wambui Nyutu has previously been publicly linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Notably, in May 2025, while attending a church service, she praised Gachagua as one of the best leaders in Kenya.
Even earlier, in November 2024, she had visited his home for a formal meeting and was referred to as a “daughter of the mountain,” further fueling claims of her political leanings.
In a swift leadership change, the NCIC has already appointed Dorcas Kedogo as the new Vice Chairperson, replacing Nyutu with immediate effect. The Commission hopes this change will restore the nonpartisan integrity and public trust required in its mission to promote national cohesion and unity.
