The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has put forward new leadership proposals for the National Assembly, following the recent cabinet appointments and subsequent resignations of several party officials.
The proposals, announced on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, were part of resolutions reached during a Central Management Committee meeting chaired by ODM party leader Raila Odinga.
The party has proposed Suna East MP Junet Mohammed to assume the position of Minority Leader, a role that will be vacated by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi.
Wandayi has been nominated by President William Ruto to serve as the Cabinet Secretary for Energy.
Mohammed, who has previously served as the Minority Whip, is expected to bring continuity and experience to the role.
In a related move, Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo will step into the role of Minority Whip, replacing Mohammed.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi is proposed to chair the Public Accounts Committee, a position left vacant by the resignation of Nominated MP John Mbadi, who was nominated to head the Treasury Ministry.
Additionally, Funyula MP Wilberforce Oundo is slated to take over as chair of the Public Investments Committee.
The changes were outlined in a statement by ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, who confirmed that the party had officially released its officials recently appointed by President Ruto as Cabinet Secretaries.
Sifuna also emphasized that there was no agreement between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza coalition, affirming that ODM remains a member of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
The party will continue to fulfill its Opposition role, focusing on accountability, transparency, and equity in governance.
“As we navigate these changes, the party will embark on wide consultations amongst its membership to ensure the effective filling of the vacant positions,” Sifuna added.
