On Monday, Bukhalalire Secondary School in Busia County and Ortum Boys in West Pokot County experienced fires.

These incidents caused significant property damage, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The fires mainly affected students’ dormitories.

The causes of these fires remain undetermined, but police are considering arson. They suggest that students might be involved, given recent patterns.

Previous Fire Incidents

These incidents follow a troubling trend. Just days before, a fire at Uhuru Secondary School in Nairobi destroyed two dormitories.

This fire affected 105 Form Three students who were preparing for their day. Although no lives were lost, the damage was significant.

Local authorities responded quickly, and all students were accounted for after the fire was controlled.

The recent fires have alarmed parents and educators. The tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, which claimed 21 pupils’ lives, has intensified scrutiny.

Days later, Fire broke out in Isiolo Girls high school, fortunately no one was injured but their commodities were destroyed. These prompted into a protest following the late arrival of fire brigades and rescue teams.

Investigations are focusing on possible electrical faults and deliberate arson. Authorities are also exploring whether negligence by school staff contributed to the tragedy.

Historical data shows that over 130 fires occurred in 2016 alone, often due to student unrest. Investigators will question various individuals connected to the schools, including staff and security personnel.

As the investigation continues, the Kenyan community remains vigilant. There is strong advocacy for improved safety measures in schools to prevent further tragedies.

The government and educational authorities are under pressure to address these issues and ensure student safety.
