The National Police Service (NPS) has officially denied any involvement in the reported abduction and alleged torture of Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi.
In a detailed statement released on the evening of Monday, May 26, the police issued a version of events that directly contradicted the narrative being circulated by Koimburi’s political allies.
The authorities disputed the claims surrounding the lawmaker’s mysterious disappearance on Sunday, stating that there was more to the story than initially reported.
Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga clarified that Koimburi was not unaware of the ongoing investigations against him.
Contrary to the statements made by some of his supporters, Nyaga revealed that the MP had been under police radar for some time due to serious allegations linked to a land fraud case.
“The MP has been the subject of an investigation over a land-related issue, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has already granted consent to proceed with legal action,” the NPS stated, reinforcing their position that Koimburi was not caught off guard by any enforcement action.
However, this contradicts an earlier statement by Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, who maintained that Koimburi had not been served with any formal summons or legal notice regarding any investigation or charges.
Nyaga further revealed that authorities had attempted to arrest Koimburi as early as Friday, May 24.
During that attempt, the MP allegedly escaped on a motorbike after sensing that he was about to be apprehended. His driver, who was present at the scene, was detained for questioning but was later released.
Addressing the now-viral video showing MP Koimburi lying in agony in a coffee plantation—reportedly after being abducted in broad daylight from a church on Sunday—Nyaga said police were taking the matter seriously.
He explained that law enforcement officers had spent most of Monday thoroughly examining the area where the video was recorded.
Although the police did not confirm or deny the authenticity of the footage, they noted that a team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters was already conducting a forensic analysis of the video and investigating all relevant details surrounding the alleged abduction.
“Officers from Juja Police Station visited the location shown in the video and have documented the area as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, a specialised unit from DCI is closely analyzing the circumstances to determine whether the MP was indeed forcefully taken as alleged,” Nyaga stated.
The police have also urged any members of the public who may have relevant information to assist in the ongoing investigation by coming forward and cooperating with authorities.
This police statement was released only a few hours after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua paid a visit to MP Koimburi at Karen Hospital.
Following the visit, Gachagua held a fiery press conference where he accused the government of orchestrating the MP’s ordeal.
Gachagua went as far as alleging that Koimburi was abducted and tortured by elite security officers allegedly hired by the state.
According to Gachagua, these officers not only physically tortured the MP but also injected him with unidentified chemicals meant to impair his ability to speak, pointing to a highly coordinated and deliberate attack.
As investigations continue, the conflicting accounts between the police and political figures have left many Kenyans with unanswered questions about what truly happened to MP George Koimburi.
The case has sparked public concern and drawn attention to broader issues around political targeting, abuse of power, and the safety of elected officials.
