Former Cabinet Minister Mukhisa Kituyi Summoned Over Allegations of Fake Degrees at MMUST
The Commission for University Education (CUE) has officially summoned former Trade and Industry Cabinet Minister Mukhisa Kituyi over serious allegations connected to questionable academic records and graduation irregularities at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
The matter has attracted public attention after claims were made suggesting possible academic misrepresentation within the institution’s graduation process.
According to CUE, the investigation began after remarks made by Kituyi during a radio interview held on March 31, 2026.
His comments raised concerns about the credibility of academic programmes and the integrity of graduation lists at MMUST, prompting the commission to take immediate interest and begin formal inquiries.
Allegations Raised During Radio Interview
During the interview, Kituyi alleged that there were cases where names of individuals who had never been admitted to the university appeared on official graduation lists.
He described the situation as deeply worrying and suggested that it could reflect wider institutional challenges within some higher education institutions in the country.
He further claimed that during a recent graduation ceremony, his nephew noticed unusual entries in the graduation roll. According to him, some names appeared despite the individuals allegedly not having studied at the university at all.
“My nephew was graduating from a public university, and he saw names of graduates who had never been to that university being marked to be on the roll for graduation,” he stated.
He went on to insist that he could provide evidence supporting his claims, adding that what he witnessed represented what he called “serious institutional decay” in parts of the higher education system.
CUE Moves to Investigate and Summon Kituyi
Following these public statements, the Commission for University Education said it launched an investigation to verify the claims and understand the basis of the allegations.
CUE also confirmed that it reached out to Kituyi through official communication dated April 9, 2026, requesting clarification.
However, the commission stated that it had not received any response from the former minister at the time of issuing its latest statement.
As a result, CUE has now formally summoned Kituyi to appear in person at its offices in Gigiri, Kiambu County, between April 20 and April 24, 2026.
The commission expects him to provide detailed explanations and any evidence he may have regarding his claims about MMUST graduation lists.
CUE emphasized that the meeting is part of its mandate to protect the credibility and integrity of university education in the country and to ensure that any public allegations are properly examined through official channels.
MMUST Responds to the Allegations
In response to the claims, MMUST has strongly denied any wrongdoing and distanced itself from allegations suggesting that individuals who did not study at the institution were awarded degrees.
In a statement released on April 2, 2026, the university explained that its graduation process is strict, structured, and follows all required academic and legal procedures. The institution stressed that no student can graduate without going through all official stages.
According to the university, every student must first be formally admitted, then register for their programme, complete coursework, sit for examinations, and meet all academic requirements before being considered for graduation.
The university further noted that final approval is given by the University Senate, which reviews and confirms all eligible candidates before graduation lists are published. MMUST insisted that its systems are designed to prevent any form of irregularity in the awarding of degrees.
Ongoing Public Interest in the Case
The developments have sparked public interest, especially because the allegations involve both a former senior government official and a public university.
Many observers are now awaiting the outcome of the CUE investigation and whether Kituyi will present evidence to support his claims.
For now, the matter remains under review, with both CUE and MMUST maintaining their respective positions as the investigation process continues.
