Janet Mbugua Announces Exit from NTV After Over a Year on “Fixing the Nation”
Janet Mbugua has officially announced her departure from Nation Media Group, where she has been serving as a co-host on the morning current affairs programme Fixing the Nation. Her exit comes after a little over one year on the show, marking the end of her latest chapter in mainstream media.
The announcement was made on April 17 during her final appearance on the programme, where she was hosting alongside Eric Latiff and Mariam Bishar.
The moment was emotional and reflective, as she used the final segment to share her decision with viewers who have followed the show daily.
Why Janet Mbugua Joined and Why She Is Leaving
Janet explained that she originally joined Fixing the Nation because it felt like a natural extension of her long-standing advocacy work and active citizen engagement.
She noted that she had already been vocal on national issues during a particularly intense period in the country, and the show offered a strong platform to continue that work in a structured and mainstream media setting.
She described the opportunity as a meaningful fit at the time, allowing her to bring discussions about national challenges, citizen concerns, and possible solutions directly to a wide audience.
The programme itself focuses on issues affecting Kenyans, featuring expert opinions, public participation, and solution-driven conversations aired across multiple platforms every weekday from 6am to 10am.
A Difficult but Necessary Decision
In her farewell remarks, Janet referred to her departure as an “early exit,” especially considering her usual pattern of staying in media roles for three to seven years.
She admitted that stepping away was not an easy decision, but said it was necessary due to a shift in her personal and professional priorities.
She emphasized that her career path is currently undergoing a transition, and while she is stepping back from television hosting, she is not stepping away from public engagement.
Instead, she plans to continue contributing through other platforms and forms of communication that align with her current focus.
Continuing Advocacy and Future Plans
Janet confirmed that she will remain active on her social media platforms, where she intends to continue engaging with audiences on social issues, public awareness, and civic conversations.
She also reaffirmed her strong commitment to the Inua Dada Foundation, the organisation she founded.
Through the foundation, she continues to focus on menstrual health management, fighting period poverty, and advocating for the rights and dignity of the girl child.
She highlighted that this work remains a central part of her life and long-term mission, even as she steps away from daily television work.
She also expressed deep appreciation to viewers, production teams, and colleagues who supported her throughout her time on the show, noting that the experience was both impactful and meaningful.
New Host Introduced
During her final appearance, Janet also introduced her successor on the programme, Fellaris Wambui, who will be taking over her role on Fixing the Nation.
Wambui brings experience from both media and corporate communication, having spent around three years in the media industry and over a decade working in corporate communications and brand management. Janet encouraged viewers to welcome her with openness and active engagement, just as they had done for previous hosts.
Fellaris Wambui Responds to Her New Role
Speaking about stepping into the role, Wambui acknowledged that she is entering a space previously shaped by strong and influential voices.
She described the opportunity as both humbling and exciting, saying she is aware of the responsibility that comes with the platform.
She added that she believes every individual has a role to play in contributing to national development and public dialogue, and she intends to use the platform to contribute meaningfully to that process.
Wambui also shared a personal note of admiration for Janet, describing her as a role model she has looked up to over the years. She referred to her new position as a “bittersweet entry,” recognizing both the honor of the opportunity and the difficulty of following in Janet’s footsteps.
