President’s Office Releases 2026 National Holidays Calendar with New County Venues

The Government of Kenya has officially unveiled the 2026 annual calendar outlining key national public holidays and other major state events, giving detailed information on when and where each national celebration will be held across the country.

The schedule, released through the Executive Office of the President, sets out a clear roadmap for national commemorations that will be observed under specific themes and hosted in different counties.

One of the most notable highlights is that Madaraka Day will be celebrated in Wajir County for the very first time since independence, marking a historic shift in how national events are rotated across the country.

According to the official communication, Article 9 of the Constitution recognizes national days as important occasions meant to strengthen national identity, unity, and the spirit of nationhood.

The government noted that since 2022, it has been celebrating national days under defined thematic areas aimed at linking national values with development priorities and social progress.

The circular further explained that the 2026 national calendar will continue this approach, with each event not only commemorated but also tied to specific themes and hosted in designated counties to ensure inclusivity and national participation.

Labour Day and Early 2026 Celebrations

The first major event in the calendar will be Labour Day, which will be observed on May 1, 2026, in Vihiga County. This event is expected to bring together workers, trade unions, government officials, and private sector representatives to reflect on labour rights, employment conditions, and national productivity.

The government has indicated that such county-based celebrations are part of a broader devolution strategy that ensures national events are not concentrated only in Nairobi but are shared across different regions of the country.

Madaraka Day to Be Held in Wajir

One of the most significant announcements in the calendar is that Madaraka Day, scheduled for June 1, will be hosted in Wajir County. This will be a historic moment, as it will be the first time the county hosts this major national holiday.

To prepare for the celebrations, the government has already initiated major infrastructure projects in the region.

The Ministry of Interior is supervising the construction of a modern 10,000-seat stadium in Wajir, which is expected to be completed before May 2026. This stadium will serve as the main venue for the Madaraka Day celebrations.

In addition, expansion works at Wajir International Airport are currently ongoing, including upgrades to the terminal building, taxiways, and runway.

These developments are intended to improve accessibility and ensure smooth logistics during the national event.

International Ocean Conference in Coastal Kenya

Between June 16 and June 18, an international Ocean Conference will be held across Mombasa County and Kilifi County.

The event is expected to bring together international delegates, environmental experts, and policymakers to discuss marine conservation, climate change, and sustainable use of ocean resources.

The selection of the coastal region reflects Kenya’s growing role in global ocean and environmental discussions, especially given its strategic coastline along the Indian Ocean.

Katiba Day in Nairobi Focuses on Youth and Innovation

Katiba Day, which will be observed on August 27, will be hosted in Nairobi County under the theme “Education, Skills and The Future.” The government plans to use this event to emphasize the importance of education, innovation, and skills development in shaping Kenya’s long-term economic growth.

Officials have indicated that discussions during the event will focus on strengthening human capital, promoting innovation, and preparing young people for emerging job markets and technological advancements.

Mazingira Day and Mashujaa Day Celebrations

Later in the year, Mazingira Day will be commemorated on October 10 in Trans Nzoia County. This event will focus on environmental conservation, tree planting initiatives, and broader sustainability efforts aimed at protecting natural resources.

Shortly after, Mashujaa Day will be celebrated on October 20 in Elgeyo-Marakwet County. This national event will honour Kenya’s heroes and heroines who contributed to the country’s independence, development, and national identity.

Jamhuri Day to Be Marked in Kiambu

Jamhuri Day, one of Kenya’s most important national holidays marking independence milestones, will be held on December 12 in Kiambu County.

President William Ruto is expected to lead the country in the celebrations, which will bring together national leaders, security agencies, and citizens in a large-scale commemorative event.

Minorities Day to Promote Inclusion in Marsabit

The year will conclude with Minorities Day, scheduled for December 18 in Marsabit County. This event will focus on promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equal participation of minority communities in national development.

The government has stated that the event will highlight policies aimed at ensuring all communities, regardless of size or location, are fully represented in national conversations.

Coordination and Planning of National Events

To ensure smooth coordination of all national celebrations, the government has appointed Dennis Itumbi to work closely with ministries, state departments, and other agencies.

His role will involve overseeing planning, communication, and logistical arrangements to ensure each national event is successfully executed across the designated counties.

The Executive Office of the President, led by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, emphasized that the structured approach to national celebrations is aimed at strengthening unity, promoting development, and ensuring that all regions of the country actively participate in national identity-building events.
