Senior DCI Boss John Onyango Loses Wife

Deputy Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) John Onyango is mourning the death of his wife.

The senior police officer received the sad news on Monday, September 8, after the death of his wife was confirmed by the Kenya Police Service (KPS).

The passing of Onyango’s wife has led to messages of condolence from colleagues, senior police officers and other members of the security fraternity who have worked with him during his long career in law enforcement.

The Kenya Police Service confirmed that senior officers visited Onyango and his family to offer their condolences and stand with them during the difficult period of mourning.

According to the KPS, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat led a delegation of senior officers from both the Kenya Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to visit the grieving DCI boss.

“The Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Mr Eliud Lagat, accompanied by senior officers from the Kenya Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, visited Deputy Director of the DCI, John Onyango, SAIG, following the passing of his wife,” the Kenya Police Service stated.

During the visit, DIG Lagat conveyed his condolences to Onyango and his family on behalf of the entire Kenya Police Service.

The police leadership also assured the family that they would continue receiving support from the Service as they come to terms with the loss of their loved one.

“On behalf of the entire Kenya Police Service, DIG Lagat conveyed his condolences to Mr Onyango and his family and assured them of the Service’s support during this period of mourning,” KPS added.

Onyango is one of the senior officers serving within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the wider National Police Service. He also holds the rank of Senior Assistant Inspector General (SAIG), reflecting his senior position within the security establishment.

The death of his wife comes at a time when several incidents involving senior police officers and their families have recently attracted public attention. Some of the cases have involved deaths following illnesses, while others have involved allegations of domestic violence.

In March this year, Assistant Inspector General Paul Kiprono Langat died following a prolonged illness. Langat was later laid to rest in Bomet County, where senior government and security officials paid tribute to him and described him as a hardworking, disciplined and principled officer who served the country with dedication.

Another case involved 43-year-old Florence Nyagah, the wife of DCI Inspector Daniel Mburu Macharia. Nyagah was found dead at their home in Roysambu on March 1 after suffering multiple deep cuts. The circumstances surrounding her death raised concerns and drew the attention of investigators.

More recently, Police Sergeant Gladys Nyaguthie Kirika, who was stationed at Gachui Police Post in Dagoretti, died on September 3 following what was reported as a domestic dispute. Her husband allegedly confessed to killing her before reportedly attempting to take his own life.

The incidents have highlighted the difficult circumstances that police officers and their families can sometimes face, both in their professional and private lives.

As Onyango and his family begin the process of mourning, colleagues within the Kenya Police Service and the DCI have joined in offering their condolences and support to the bereaved family.

Further details regarding the funeral arrangements and burial of Onyango’s wife are expected to be communicated by the family at a later stage.
