The officer linked to the killing of a US Embassy employee has been detained for the next 14 days.
Dennis Mwai Irungu is said to have shot and killed a young man outside a night club in Kiambu.
On Tuesday, Kiambu Magistrate Wanjiru Ng’ang’a granted a 14-day detention following a request from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Corporal Ruben Mwaniki of the DCI informed the court that the victim was conversing with a friend outside a nightclub when the suspect shot him from behind.
“We are seeking to detain Irungu, the prime suspect in the murder of US Embassy engineer Anthony Njomo Kiuno. We need more time to gather evidence and round up witnesses.”
Kiambu Police County Commander issued summons on Monday, leading to the apprehension of the suspect.
“Considering the respondent’s societal position, I concur with the applicant. Being a police officer, the respondent holds influence, and there’s a possibility of witness tampering and interference with investigations if granted bail or bond,” the judge stated.
Furthermore, the judge emphasized, “The court must also weigh the rights of the respondent, presumed innocent until proven guilty, against the interests of the public. Given the loss of life, and in the pursuit of justice, I find merit in the application and grant it. The respondent will be held in custody for 14 days during investigations.”
As part of the arrest, officials seized his designated firearm, 15 rounds of ammunition, a damaged trigger guard, and a firearm with a missing serial number, all of which were preserved as evidence.
