During Tuesday’s parliamentary proceedings, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula issued a two-hour ultimatum demanding immediate disclosure of the status of Gabriel Oguda, a policy analyst working in the Minority leader’s office, who was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi recounted receiving a distressing call at 2:30 a.m. from Oguda, who claimed that police officers were forcibly entering his house. According to Wandayi, subsequent efforts to mobilize legal assistance were thwarted as his phone calls were jammed.

I was unable to make or receive phone calls until 6:30 a.m. They broke into his compound, broke his house’s door, and abducted him. Frantic searches across police stations in Nairobi yielded no information on Oguda’s whereabouts. We do not know his whereabouts and don’t take it lightly. We call on the Speaker to leverage his authority to secure the release of Oguda and other activists reportedly captured,”

In response, Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah assured the House of his commitment to liaise with Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to verify whether Oguda was in police custody.

“Let us not create an impression that MPs are immune to the law; we must all be treated equally. I will check with the police IG whether the said officer is in the hands of the police to avoid speculations,” Ichung’wah stated.
