Mombasa experienced tensions and violence as protests against the controversial finance bill turned deadly and destructive.

At least two people were reported to have been shot and injured by a private citizen during the protests.

The incident occurred along Nyerere Road, where several witnesses and police officials confirmed to a certain media that a man, apparently angered by the disruption caused by the demonstrators, opened fire at close range.

The victims were immediately taken to the hospital, and the assailant was apprehended by the authorities. The exact motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

As the protests intensified, a section of the demonstrators set multiple vehicles ablaze, causing widespread panic and chaos. In a video obtained circulating in social media, at least five vehicles were seen engulfed in flames as protesters distanced themselves from the inferno.

Firefighters quickly responded to the scene, working tirelessly to extinguish the fires and prevent further damage.

The demonstrations have paralyzed business activities in key areas of Mombasa.

Mwembe Tayari, the main stage for the county’s bustling booking stations, saw a complete halt in operations. Nawala Center, one of the busiest commercial buildings in the area, was also shut down, with employees keeping a vigilant watch over the doors as the protests unfolded outside.

In response to the escalating situation, police have taken significant measures to prevent the protestors from reaching Mombasa State House on Mama Ngina Drive.
