Tensions escalated in Nairobi today as protesters brought a stark symbol of their discontent to the heart of the city.
Over 10 caskets, draped with Kenyan flags, were carried into the Central Business District (CBD) by demonstrators participating in ongoing protests against recent government policies.
The dramatic scene unfolded as protesters strategically lined up the brown caskets in prominent areas of the CBD, drawing attention from both bystanders and authorities.
As police attempted to intervene, some officers were seen loading the caskets onto a truck, presumably to clear the streets.
However, the symbolic gesture continued as protesters defiantly reclaimed the caskets and opened them in full view of the public.
The clash between demonstrators and police intensified as tear gas canisters were fired to disperse the youth, who had gathered around the caskets.
Major roads leading into the CBD remain blocked as the protests enter their fifth consecutive day. Widespread discontent over government policies, particularly the recently proposed finance bill, has galvanized citizens into action across various parts of the city.
Businesses have been significantly affected, with disruptions reported in key commercial areas such as Uhuru Highway and Haile Selassie Avenue.
