Kenya has begun receiving the military helicopters donated by the United States as part of the recent state visit agreements between President William Ruto and US President Joe Biden.
This initiative is part of the broader efforts to bolster regional peace and security.
Two of the eight UH-1 ‘Hueys helicopters arrived in Nairobi two weeks ago and are currently being assembled at the Embakasi Garrison hangar by a specialized team from the US Air Force, the manufacturing company, and the Kenya Air Force.
Sources indicated that the choppers will undergo comprehensive tests before their official handover later this year. The remaining six Hueys are expected to be shipped in next month.
The UH-1 Huey, designed and produced by Bell Helicopter, is a utility military helicopter widely recognized for its versatility and reliability. In addition to the Hueys, Kenya will also receive eight MD-500 helicopters from the US, aimed at enhancing Kenya’s participation in peacekeeping missions.
The MD-500 series, developed from the Hughes 500, includes the MD 500E, MD 520N, and MD 530F models, known for their light utility in both civilian and military operations.
These helicopters will be utilized for a variety of missions, including troop evacuation and deployment, supply delivery, and air assaults.
The strategic addition of these aircraft is expected to significantly enhance Kenya’s defense capabilities.
